Overall Meaning

The song "Sodomy" by Hair from the rock musical of the same name is a satirical commentary on the hypocrisy and sexual repression of American society during the 1960s. The lyrics of the song deal with topics such as sodomy, fellatio, cunnilingus and pederasty which were considered taboo and immoral at the time. The mentioning of these words is an attempt to rebel against the conservative norms of society and to challenge the status quo. The use of the word "nasty" emphasizes the societal condemnation of these sexual acts.

The first few lines of the song contain a question from a child to their father "Father, why do these words sound so nasty?". This brings to attention how sexual topics are considered taboo, even within families where parents are expected to educate their children on such issues. The song then goes on to describe the pleasures of masturbation and urges people to join a holy orgy, drawing from ancient sexual practices outlined in the Kama Sutra. The song concludes with the message that everyone should enjoy these pleasures and not be ashamed of their sexual desires.

Overall, the song "Sodomy" is a powerful commentary on the societal taboo surrounding sexuality, with the aim of challenging sexual repression and promoting sexual freedom for everyone.

I sang this song in the middle of the frozen foods section of the supermarket I was three. At the top of my lungs. My mother pretended she didn't know who I was.

When I was growing up we had the stage soundtrack record in our home. I was only ten years old or so, and I was quite confused by this song. Finally I memorized each of the words and went to my dad and asked him what each word meant. I don't think he was familiar with the record so he must've been very confused about how I'd come up with the list of words to ask him about. Poor guy defined each word honestly to me, though.

LoreleiMission - What a good dad you had! Honesty is the best policy. Rest in peace.

That's a good dad

Me too. But I was 15 and I ran around singing "sodomy". My dad would get so passed if he heard me. So I could only sing it in private. "Masterbation can be fun".
