Ive read a similar storyline to this on audiobook, where the protagonist agreed to be a surrogate mother. She ended up having twins, and met the father of the twins 6 years later.
However, the male protagonist wasnt married, and it had a more sinister storyline

The other day I was thinking about how both my older kids used to enjoy school, and how my youngest hated going to school. Then I started thinking, the crazies that followed me were also following him. So if they were visiting him in school (the innocence of a child might have disturbed him too, having this stranger come and coach him to betray his mom), so perhaps he didn't want that feeling and therefore didn't want to go to school to avoid the crazies. 🤷 It probably felt like someone molesting him, telling him "Don't tell your mother anything about what goes on between us." ☹️🤷 So not only have I suffered mentally, but poor Joseph must have suffered greatly too, and that is why I had so much trouble with him and not liking school. But whatever, yes the past is the past and when I stand before God I will still be able to claim my innocence too, in such a wicked oppressive manipulative game.

Inspired by "Jane Eyre", manifestly (the motif, of the wealthy gentleman man, of the poor governess and of "the bothering mad / paralyzed wife").
This is what made me slightly uncomfortable : for me, in that perspective, the movie is a kind of missed opportunity whereas, with the basic elements of the storyline, there was a real possibility to produce a captivating story and a cinematographic work in its own right.

On another hand, I'm a bit embarrassed by the fact that the main theme is that of surrogate mothers and by the introduction of the question of euthanasia : these two topics may be as old as the world, but the fact that we discuss them openly, as societal subjects, is quite contemporary in my opinion.
That's why I don't think it was absolutely relevant (even a bit intellectualy dishonest, if I'm severe) to insert them in a story that takes place in the XIXth century : in this time, it's much more likely that these problems remained unspoken and puted aside in a way or another ...
