The City
"The City" Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blessed are the poor
for the kingdom is yours
Blessed when you mourn, there's comfort in His arms
Blessed are the meek with the world at your feet
Blessed when it's righteousness that you seek
It's beautiful
Beautiful
Like a city on a hill
Lighting up the night
For the glory of the Lord
Rise and shine
We will'

Shine
Light of the world
we can't hide it
This beautiful light it
Shines
For all of the world
To believe we can be
A city on a hill

Blessed when you're merciful, you'll find grace
Blessed are the pure, you'll see the face of God
Blessed are you making peace on earth
Blessed when you follow, even when it hurts
It's beautiful
Beautiful

Like a city on a hill
Lighting up the night
For the glory of the Lord
Rise and shine
We will'

Shine
Light of the world
we can't hide it
This beautiful light it
Shines
For all of the world
To believe we can be
A city on a hill
]
For the glory of The Lord
Rise and shine [x3]

For the glory of The Lord
The glory of the Lord

Overall Meaning

The song "The City" by Blessing Offor is a beautiful call to action for Christians to embrace the teachings of Jesus and be a light to the world. The lyrics draw from the Beatitudes, which are a series of blessings given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. The message of the song is that those who follow the teachings of Jesus are blessed and will be a city on a hill that shines brightly for all to see.

The opening lyrics of the song, "Blessed are the poor for the kingdom is yours, Blessed when you mourn, there's comfort in His arms," are a direct reference to the first two Beatitudes. The song then goes on to describe the other Beatitudes, including being meek, seeking righteousness, showing mercy, being pure, and making peace on earth. The chorus of the song emphasizes the need for Christians to shine their light so that others may see it and believe.

The imagery of a city on a hill is also significant. This metaphor is drawn from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, in which he said, "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." The song is a reminder that as Christians, we are called to let our light shine so that others may see the good works we do and glorify God.

It really bugs me that for some reason all the Besz in the show speak English and have signs written in actual English and the Ul-Qomans use the Georgian script when Besz is supposed to be written in an alphabet that looks like Cyrillic and its the Ul-Qomans who use the Latin script.

@RyanLynch1

yeah but i see why they did it. the protagonist is besz and the story focuses on beszel quite a bit so if they want to make it most accessible then they gotta swap the writing systems

Borlú goes to an orientation in the book, but the actual scene is not described in detail, it's just quickly mentioned.
