The Side
"The City" Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walked with no one and talked with no one
And I had nothing but shadows
Then one morning you passed
And I brightened at last
Now I greet the day and complete the day
With the sun in my heart
All my worry blew away
When you taught me how to say

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet

On the sunny side of the street
Grab your street

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Side" by The City, the singer begins by talking about how they used to walk alone and aimlessly with nothing but shadows. However, one morning someone passed by and brought light to their life. This person taught the singer how to live life on the "sunny side of the street" - to leave their worries behind and focus on the positives. The singer now greets each day with the sun in their heart and no longer worries because of this person's influence.

The chorus emphasizes this idea of focusing on the positive and leaving worries behind. The singer encourages the listener to grab their coat and hat, leave their worries at the doorstep, and step onto the "sunny side of the street." The sound of pitter-pattering feet and a happy tune are supposed to accompany the listener's step as they start living life in a more positive way.

One of my most favourite scenes....So happy somebody uploaded it! I would just like to take the moment to thank all those wonderful men out there...the ones who recognise the fear, the pain, the anxiety, the broken heartedness and vulnerability of the women they love

and tear the walls down

I find this to be one of the most sexiest moment on entire SATC series.

Absolutely! It always breaks my heart when they finish.. Samantha may have been Smith’s true love but Richard was Samantha’s.. no doubt.

This song, this scene… PERFECTION!

absolutely beautifully written

A beautiful scene, that music makes it and Samantha looks extra beautiful here. Love how the music keeps playing through to Carrie and Aiden. Apparently the twin towers were edited out of the background of the rooftop pool scene. This was the first episode to air after the September 11 attacks.
