I was never a huge fan of Bob Dylan, I respected his musicianship but he just wasn't for me. but one day out of no where this song played while I was driving. I was absolutely mesmerized. I can't describe the feeling that this song gives me. It's like a nostalgia for something I never really experienced but I still long for. Again I can't describe, but I'm still mesmerized every time I listen to this song. I'm a huge Dylan fan now, and even though I love A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, this will always be my favorite song from him, and one of my top 3 songs ever.

I was very lucky to buy a stash of books about Bob Dylan from the estate of a deceased musician in Cape Town, South Africa. I looked up their value online and his book "Lyrics 1962 - 1985" is now going for $ 700. I consider myself a rich man tho I have no cash, and I will NEVER sell this book. It is worth a million bucks to me.

In January of 1967 I got out of the army and started college. I took classes all day and worked eight hours every night as a computer operator. I got home after midnight and had calculus at eight AM three days a week. Every night when I got home I listened to this with a beer and after Bob and a beer I could sleep. Then back into the grind. I made it! BSME 1971. MSME 1979. Retired in 2001. Good education, good career, good wife, good kids (twin girls). The army made it all possible even thought I hated every minute of it.

this is te only song in all of history that i feel like is magic, it literally feels like he is casting a spell. "yes to dance beneath the diamond sky, with one hand waving free" that line brings me to tears every time. tears from the absolute joy of it. it is a metaphor, for everything that is great, it represents true absolute freedom, it represents the unbridled exuberance of youth, it represents all the wonder and the joy of existence and infinity of the quest for knowledge.

Back in the late 60s, we used to drop acid, then pop an amyl cap just in time for "to dance beneath the diamond sky witih one hand waving free." How every detail of those fleeting moments from 50-odd years ago, especially Dylan's lyrics written across the sky as if with fireworks, remains etched in memory is a mystery—a very pleasant mystery.

The 60s weren't all good vibes and happiness, but the tenor of the times was confidence in a better life than our parents had had, which in large part turned out to be justified. @@ditch-1196 His lyrics are ambiguous because of the rich symbolism... and probably because Dylan was high as a kite when he wrote the song. People have different interpretations and I have my own take.

I really don't know who this Tambourine Man was to Dylan when he composed the song. I think of him as my happy alter ego. The song / poem is a conversation between my happy, playful, care-free self, and the depressed, useless other half, with empty streets for brains and a vanished empire of failed dreams.

The mystery and beauty of the lyrics had a big effect on me then, and in retrospect made me fall in love with the English language which, at the time, was just a subject I hated in high school.

@@robinrobyn1714 I'm not a rap fan, but some rappers write poetry as good as Bob Dylan's or Thomas Dylan's for that matter. Obviously, it's not as rigid and structured as a Shakespeare sonnet, but you can't read / listen to some of their lyrics and not be moved by their ingenuity.

I think the '64 Folk Festival version is superior, though the margins between the two versions are thin. This version might have an extra verse, but the FF version has delivery, harmony and soul like few Dylan recordings do.

Forget these wankers who commented on your post. The reason it makes you cry, is indeed because it is beautiful. But it is more than that. It is from the perspective of the forlorn and empty, hopeful towards the future, yet nostalgic of the past. Not every line makes 'sense' in a rational manner, but together they evoke a feeling of sad resignation and glimmer of hope simultaneously. It is not in any way political. It transcends that. It is about the journey of life, written for those of us who love all the little sweet things, or deep good things, that come and go, while knowing we can do little to prevent or restrain it.

this song has such good memories for me. on my first ever hunting trip my dad forgot every cd besides a few of bob dylan’s songs and this was one of them. at that time i wasn’t into this kind of music and really only liked the new stuff at that point in time. so as the days went on listening only to bob dylan you’d think it would eventually get old but it only got better as the days passed. even though we only caught a few grouse on that trip it was one of my fondest memories with my dad uncle and grandpa

While this song has a elements of longing, I believe that Dylan is also bowing to the joy of feeling free, and to the power of love, hope, spirituality, music, and the imagination. Like others, I feel the tears well up when I hear this song, but they are not tears of sorrow but of heartfelt gratitude for Dylan's ability to have touched me so deeply over the decades (I'm in my 70's and bought his first album way-back-when). And he continues to do so as he (and I) move through this life....saw him for the first time in LA a few weeks ago and could relate to the healing wisdom everything he was offering to the audience!
