Jailhouse Rock
"/Joliet"/Jake Blues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The warden threw a party in the county jail.
The prison band was there and they began to wail.
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing.
You should've heard those knocked out jailbirds sing.
Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.
Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone,
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone.
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang,
The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang.
Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Number forty-seven said to number three:
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see.
I sure would be delighted with your company,
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me."
Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

The sad sack was a sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone.
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square.
If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair."
Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake,
No one's lookin', now's our chance to make a break."
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix,
I wanna stick around a while and get my kicks."
Let's rock, everybody, let's rock.

Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Jailhouse Rock" by Joliet Jake Blues describe a lively party that breaks out in a county jail. The prison band, consisting of Spider Murphy on tenor saxophone and Little Joe on slide trombone, with the whole rhythm section playing from the Purple Gang, starts playing, and the whole cell block starts dancing to the Jailhouse Rock. All the knocked out jailbirds join in, with everyone having a great time. Number 47 is particularly taken with number three and asks her to dance with him. Even the sad sack sitting in the corner weeping has a chance to join in the fun as the warden tells him to use a wooden chair if he can't find a partner. Shifty Henry suggests to Bugs that they make a break for it, but Bugs decides to stay and enjoy the party.

The lyrics of "Jailhouse Rock" imply a deeper meaning beyond the surface narrative. The idea that despite being incarcerated, prisoners can still find ways to experience moments of joy is quite profound. It is a reminder that sometimes life can deal us a bad hand, but we can still find something beautiful in the midst of it all. It also highlights the resilience of the human spirit: that even when confined, physically and emotionally, people can improvise and find moments of release.
