After irreconcilable differences with his previous musical project, Saturnus, Larsen began writing music of a different vein, similar in style to his neofolk influences but very different than the doom metal he had previously created.
In 1999, the debut :Of the Wand & the Moon: album was released, entitled Nighttime Nightrhymes. Characterized by folk songs with themes ranging from expressions of love, loss, joy and ancestral Germanic paganism, the album was interspersed with experimental dark ambient pieces and tribal drumming. The album marked a new entry for Denmark in a new wave of Germanic post-industrial folk projects alongside contemporaries such as Forseti and Sonne Hagal.
2001 saw the release of a second :Of the Wand & the Moon: release entitled :Emptiness:Emptiness:Emptiness:, with refined production and a continued but expanded sound from previous work, the album further cemented the reputation of the project. A live version of :Of the Wand & the Moon: also debuted in 2001, beginning a long series of shows over the next few years.
After the release of a split album with Sol Invictus and a few vinyl singles, a collection of b-sides was released entitled Lucifer in 2003. Themed after its namesake yet featuring a photograph of a surprised cat on its cover, the record included various outtakes and unreleased tracks from the :Emptiness:Emptiness:Emptiness: period. A box set was also released featuring vinyl versions of previous recordings, as well as exclusive material.
A single entitled "Hail Hail Hail" was released in 2005 as a preview of upcoming material, showcasing a more experimental side of the project and making use of Arabic instrumentation for the title track. This was followed by a full length album entitled Sonnenheim which met to positive critical and fan reviews alike, marking the project as one of the major groups within its genre. The album further showcased themes of Germanic paganism, as exemplified by the title track "Nighttime in Sonnenheim" and introduced a more extroverted and thematically martial side of the project, with considerably less focus on the romantic love songs that had previously been hallmarks of the band's material.

I would call the sun from the sky
Hide the warmth from those who would seek it
An eye for an eye
I never claimed to be spiteful
I never paid them for their lies
But I fantasize of their downfall as I lie awake at night
Crawl away from here
The lowest form is what you preach
What you preach is for the weak
The hollow
The hollow
Could you ever reach
The heart from the hollow
Could you even breathe
Through the bridges that you've burned
If I had a penchant for reason
I would call the sun from the sky
Hide the warmth from those who would seek it
An eye for an eye
I'll force the hand to destroy them
And I'll be the one to reclaim
When the line proceeds to dethrone an empire in my name
Crawl away from here
Back to where you belong
The lowest form is what you preach
What you preach is for the weak
Reclaim
Could you ever reach
The heart from the hollow
Could you even breathe
Through the bridges that you've burned
If I had a penchant for reason
I would call the sun from the sky
Hide the warmth from those who would seek it
An eye for an eye
I want to know if you could
I want to know if you could
Prepare for what's to befall you
I'll tear the thorn from your side
Rip apart the walls to show
You're nothing but a parasite
Could you ever reach
The heart from the hollow
Could you even breathe
Through the bridges that you've burned
Could you ever reach
The heart from the hollow
Could you even breathe
Through the bridges that you've burned
If I had a penchant for reason
I would call the sun from the sky
Hide the warmth from those who would seek it
An eye for an eye
I want to know if you could
I want to know if you could
The song "Hollow Upon Hollow" by Of The Wand & The Moon is a melancholic track with hauntingly beautiful vocals and poetic lyrics. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but it seems to be about someone who has been hurt by a person they trusted, and now they fantasize about revenge and taking back what they feel was rightfully theirs. There is a sense of bitterness and anger towards the person who hurt them, but also a yearning for connection and understanding.
The lyrics suggest an inner turmoil where the persona is torn between their desire for revenge and their inherent kindness. There seems to be a struggle to find a middle ground between the two. The repeated line "Could you ever reach the heart from the hollow" could be interpreted as a plea for the person who hurt them to understand their pain and try to make amends. It could also be read as a question of whether the persona themselves is capable of forgiveness and letting go of their anger.
The song is filled with vivid imagery that creates a dark, atmospheric feel. The repeated line "Crawl away from here, back to where you belong" creates a sense of rejection and implies that the person who hurt the persona is not welcome in their life anymore. The use of the sun as a metaphor for warmth and happiness, and the desire to hide it from those who seek it, emphasizes the persona's desire for vengeance and to protect themselves from future pain.
