Outside
[Preview] Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at what you've done
Stand still, falling away from me
When it takes so long
Fire's out, what do you want to be?

Now I'm holding on
Myself was never enough for me
Gotta be so strong
There's a power in what you do
Now every other day I'll be watching you

Oh-oh, oh-oh, I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, we did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, we did everything right
Now I'm on the outside

So you give me no reason
For me to stay close to you
Tell me what lovers do
How are we still breathing?
It's never for us to choose
I'll be the strength in you

Now I'm holding on (now I'm holding on)
Myself was never enough for me
Gotta be so strong
There's a power in what you do
Now every other day I'll be watching you

Oh-oh, oh-oh, I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, we did everything right
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
Oh-oh, we did everything right
Now I'm on the outside

I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside
I'll show you what it feels like

Oh, (oh, oh), I'll show you what it feels like
Now I'm on the outside

(Oh, oh), we did everything right
Now I'm on the outside

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song “Look at what you've done, stand still, falling away from me, when it takes so long, fire’s out, what do you want to be?” can be interpreted as the singer looking back on a relationship that has ended. The first line is a phrase often used to express disappointment and the sense of the singer’s relationship falling away from them is represented by the phrase “standing still”. The line “what do you want to be?” can be seen as an expression of confusion on the part of the singer as to what their partner wanted from the relationship.

The chorus of the song serves to emphasize the change in relationship dynamics between the singer and their partner. The line “now I’m on the outside” suggests that the singer feels like an outsider looking in, perhaps indicating that the relationship was not as close or intimate as they thought. The line “we did everything right” could be seen as the singer’s attempt to rationalize the end of the relationship, implying that they did everything they could to make it work.

The second part of the song shifts to the singer’s role as a provider of strength and support, with lines such as “I’ll be the strength in you”. The closing lines of the song, “Oh, (oh, oh), I’ll show you what it feels like, now I’m on the outside” can be seen as a taunt to their former partner, stating that they will now experience what it’s like to be on the outside of the relationship.

I'm from her country village and I know a little bit about her struggles, highlighted here-
She doesn't get the recognition she really deserves ! Because she is extremely honest and true to herself in regard to her songwriting, which is evident in her first two albums. She was getting huge recognition just within a year of her career she topped the Prestigious BBC Sound Of ....2010 poll and bagged the BRITs Critic's Choice Award even before her debut album. Performing at huge venues like in British Royal Family, White House,Nobel Prize Concert, also invited in Russia but she boycotted in protest of some controversial laws. Her initial celeb fans include Beyonce and Rihanna herself ! Opening tours for Bruno Mars,Katy Perry, her fame shot up from a countrygirl to famous popstar just within few years of her debut. But after signing to her record label, she started to loose her independence which she once had in her early days of university.
" I was unprepared for success ", she told.
During her third album her label pushed her into the world of mainstream pop with big names like Max Martin, Greg Kurstin,Ryan Tedder.............and her album Delirium got a super huge success among the mass pop loving audience in both US and UK.(Debuted at #3 on Billboard and UK charts)
Unfortunately most of the album was not written by her and she was uncomfortable with that genre, " .......I knew in my bones it wasn’t right. I remember playing it to my family and friends: ‘Skip it, hate this one.’ I look back at pictures of myself performing and I just know I’m not happy. It’s in my face, it’s in my smile........ not an Ellie Goulding record."
Her fame suddenly skyrocketed in the circle of A-Line popstars like Taylor Swift,Katy Perry,Lady Gaga.
As she was a honest ,shy and quite naive countrygirl from Herefordshire,Britain she couldn't cope up with all this sudden fame & achievements and was also getting sick due to her Delirium World Tour ranging from London to NYC to Sydney to Toronto to Tokyo to Seoul to Moscow to Bejing everywhere , over 100 shows a year in 80+ countries !(She even started to suffer from severe insomnia, vocal chord disabilities, heart ailments due to exhaustion)
"I'd just become a robot ", she said.
Clearly she got pushed off beyond the limits.Once doctors said,"Ellie’s body clock is completely out of sync and she has found herself lying awake in bed most nights unable to get to sleep. All the travelling through random time zones has messed with her system. She just can’t get to sleep at night, and even when she’s back in England the insomnia is sapping her energy." Eventually she started to suffer from Imposter syndrome,Clinical Depression, Panic attacks ,Severe Insomnia - once thought to leave musical career !! This made her to take a five year long career hiatus (pause),she disappeared from the public media for a while & started to spend a normal life in her country home and New York, which I think caused the mass audience to divert into other singers. But whether you accept or not it's a fact that she gave life to the British Female Pop (also she holds the record for highest entries in Billboard Hot 100 by any British Female Artist in the History ). But all this fame was mercenary to her,it was literally destroying her inner peace.

Fortunately she recuperated and revived after the career hiatus and rexplored the world she knew by getting back into many philanthropic works with UN,WWF,.......... She was honored as UN Goodwill Ambassador by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in UNGA, and also got the UN Global Leadership Award for her contributions in social justice activism. Actively involved in climate change, helping homeless people, victims of domestic violence, protecting wildlife, considers Dr Jane Goodall,Sir David Attenborough as her hero. Joined global summits like World Economic Forum at Davos,One Young World 2019, COP26 with Emma Watson as the only two female stars in the summit.............
Presently she's is in a happy state of mind, married and just had her baby month ago,now working on her upcoming 5th album.
Her struggles are not so highlighted and remains buried under, but she revealed many of her stories and even spoke up against the atrocities faced by female stars in the industry and even indirectly took part in the MeToo movement revealing her struggles in early days of her career. She is thinking about to create a documentary or write a book all about these!
Just listen to her 4th new album BRIGHTEST BLUE, a story of reinventing oneself from the dark, mercenary days of fame, glamour & fake relationships to a state of self reliant euphoria. Follow the lyrics of tracks like START,Cyan,Woman,Ode to Myself,............. 💙
