In the then Soviet airforce aircrews were mostly given non officer rank. They mostly went through local flying clubs and into the airforce. Only a few went to University training.
The Russian also had a long tradition of not sending officers to Academies until after a few years of on the job training. Many were conscripts themselves.
Like the US air forces of the Cold War the Soviets had a huge Air Force and quickly trained men as fast as they could.
Yuri Gagarin was at a technical school and did flight cadet training as part of his national service. He was selected out of thousands of applicants as he was a very cool and able pilot and short enough to fit into the capsule- he should’ve been in flight training as he was too short. He could not see over the cockpit without sitting on a cushion.
By time he finished cosmonaught training he was an old lieutenant but the Premier had him promoted to Major while in orbit.

Russia has been producing some very good movies lately. Both in the story telling and the quality of the production from the sets, costumes and props. Movies like "Kalashnikov" & "T-34" are examples of recent Russian movies that are worth watching. The Russian CGI industry have also made leaps and bounce on the quality of their CGI. The CGI in this movie is fantastic. Brilliantly realistic. It's first rate. It puts some of the recent Hollywood movies to shame.

@Nuno Gonzalez America also made propaganda films
Ya boy Ed
@Nuno Gonzalez bro it’s just a movie. You could make the argument for pretty much any movie then.

Those two cosmonauts were the perfect people for what ended up happening to them. Sheer courage, grit and determination - along with a healthy dose of crazy luck - helped deal with events that go far beyond what you would think the "usual" risks of space flight entail, but they completed the mission. I was impressed with the degree of detail in the movie. Leonov had a beautiful vintage Strella pilot's watch on his wrist.

Aleksei Leonov certainly did an awesome job... and so humble and self-effacing in interviews! An aeronautical hero

A great aviator indeed! Hats off to the man.

That is why they named the spaceship in "2010" after him. One of my favorite spaceships in all of fiction, because it looks so real.

If Russia would just declassify its cold war adventures their Hollywoodski would have 50 years of movie blockbusters to make.
