The rose
(Amanda Mcbroom)

Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger, an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower & you its only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
Its the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely & the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky & the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the
rose

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Amanda McBroom’s “The Rose” are a beautiful and poignant reflection on the nature of love. McBroom exposes various perspectives on what love is, bringing together the different ways in which it can be experienced, and shows how love is often feared and eluded by some of us. The song opens with contrasting descriptions of love, depicting how it is perceived by different people: some see it as a powerful force that can cause destruction, like a river that drowns the tender reed or a razor that leaves the soul to bleed, while others view it as an eternal longing, an ever-aching need that is impossible to quench. However, McBroom renders a different view of love, one that creates and nurtures life, like a seed that grows into a flower.

McBroom also delves into the concept of fear and how it can prevent individuals from taking risks and life opportunities. Fear is illustrated as an inhibiting force, which prevents people from fully embracing life as they are afraid of failure and pain. McBroom highlights that not taking a chance may actually inhibit someone from experiencing the very thing they desire - love. By bringing attention to these ideas, The Rose inspires us to be brave and to not let fear hold us back from pursuing love and living fully.

In conclusion, “The Rose” is a beautiful song that provides a refreshing outlook on love, the different perspectives individuals have, and how preventing oneself from taking risks due to the fear of the unknown may inhibit them from growing, learning and experiencing life to its truest and fullest potential.
