By the Time I Get to Phoenix
[unknown] Lyrics

By The Time I Get To Phoenix - Johnny Rivers

By the time I get to Phoenix she'll be rising
She'll find the note I left hangin' on her door
She'll laugh when she reads the part that says I'm leavin'
'Cause I've left that girl so many times before

By the time I make Albuquerque she'll be working
She'll prob'ly stop at lunch and give me a call
But she'll just hear that phone keep on ringin'
Off the wall that's all

By the time I make Oklahoma she'll be sleepin'
She'll turn softly and call my name out loud
And she'll cry just to think I'd really leave her
Tho' time and time I try to tell her so
She just didn't know I would really go.
(Also performed by Glen Campbell)

Oh, he was definitely my cup of tea. Problem is, I didn't realize it until he passed. I was familiar with this song and his various hits. Could sing along with all of them. But when I came here to YouTube to pay my respects after his passing, I found a Glen Campbell I had no idea existed. I never once considered going to one of his concerts. Now I could kick myself from here to kingdom come for that.

Because I don't pay attention to pop culture, I didn't know about all his destructive behavior (including Toxic Tanya) until the news covered it upon his death. I'd heard he had become (actually, returned to his faith as a) Christian and was relieved to learn that. I remembered seeing his mug shot on the news when he fell off the wagon and got arrested for drunk driving. It was so sad to me because there's nothing that the news media love more than a Christian who hits bottom.

The years went by and he was back in the news because of his Alzheimer's diagnosis. Very sad news, but I still didn't make an effort to learn any more about him. Then he passed, so I did what most people do -- hit YouTube. What I found astonished me, so I spent several weeks becoming familiar with Glen, both the talent and the man. I now consider myself the world's greatest Glen Campbell fan, and I wear the title proudly. :)

I was never one to be concerned about whether Glen was cool or not. I like what I like without regard to musical trends that don't speak to me. I've never liked screechy guitars, or angry, counter-culture, rebellious music, so that wasn't a condition that had to be met for me to like Glen. But I've got dancing in my bones, and I really can't remember any of Glen's songs that moved me to dance. Therefore, I have none of his records in my enormous vinyl collection.

When I came to YT, I first I looked for his hits since that was about all I knew about him. What I ended up finding here is a man who was able to cover almost any and every genre of music and almost always do it better than (or at least as well as) the original artist. I truly had no idea what an accomplished guitarist he was. O!M!G! Just amazing! His perfect-pitch, 5-octave voice is so fabulous, that on some occasions, it's invasive -- meaning that he can reach inside and touch your very bone marrow with emotion and there's not a thing you can do to resist it. He can perform with humor, emotion, playfulness and dignity without ever having learned to read a note of music. It was just part of who he was. Thank You, Lord, for the talent you imparted in Glen Campbell and that I was alive at the right time to partake of that talent.

That he returned to his faith is the thing that makes me happiest. I know I'll get to hear his music again and on a level unimaginable from what we've been blessed to experience on earth. So, is Glen Campbell my cup of tea? Heck YEAH!!!

P.S. And here's my shallow side coming out, but he's a real treat to look at. Definitely some nice eye candy. <3

The Orchestra in the back drop Makes me looooooooong for the past. For me, there's nothing more provoking than music to bring a yearning for my yesterdays. Music is so powerful! It can recapture the emotions, mood, and smell in the air of my surroundings. Music taps into my joys, sorrows, heart aches, and new beginnings. So, to you my friends of young or old I say, create for yourself, an arsenal of nothing but positive, loving and nurturing moments so you can one day, while reminiscing, wear a big smile, knowing that you took advantage of all of the positive moments of your yesterdays.
