Can
[unknown] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm holding you close to me
Fulfilling your fantasy
Don't fight it come dance with me
We moving just like the sea
(And now we say)
Can I be your girl?
Can I rock your world?
Let me be your girl
I want to rock your world.
I'm holding you close to me
I'm feeling your energy
Don't fight it come dance with me
We moving just like the sea
(And now we say)
Can I be your girl?
Can I rock your world?
Let me be your girl
I want to rock your world

Time keeps slipping away
Time keeps slipping away

Overall Meaning

The first verse of the song "I Can't Make You Love Me" by [unknown] describes the pain and frustration of unrequited love. The singer acknowledges that they cannot force someone to love them. They cannot make their own heart feel something that it doesn't. Despite wanting to give their heart and feel the power of love, the other person simply won't reciprocate those feelings. The song is about the hopeless feeling of wanting to be loved by someone who doesn't feel the same way.

The second verse, performed by Big Jess, takes a different approach to the theme of the song. He sings about the struggles and tragedies of his life that he cannot expect others to understand or relate to. He touches on topics of violence, protection, and poverty. However, he recognizes that he can't expect others to feel his pain or understand his stress. All he can do is try his best to make things better for himself.

The two different verses in the song explore different sides of the concept of love and understanding. One is helpless in their desire for another person's love, while the other recognizes the limitations of being understood by others. These two viewpoints come together to make "I Can't Make You Love Me" a powerful song about the complexity of human emotion.

Rest in Peace, Damo Suzuki
(Jan. 16, 1950 - Feb. 9, 2024)

I was lucky to interview Damo in 2020 on Vinyl Writers, he preferred video chat so we could see each other's faces during our conversation. Future Days will always be my favorite Can album and was Damo's own personal favorite, an ambient, atmospheric, experimental, funky, groovy, psychedelic trip.

NIce to hear you had a conversation with him. I didn't know it was his favourite. I thought both he and Jaki thought it was too symphonic - didn't he say he thought he'd joined a heavy rock band! Thanks Damo.

Love and respect to Damo Suzuki and this masterpiece of an album. An amazing and important contributor to the modern language of music, rock and/or otherwise, and the arts permanent and always mutating. A true warrior.

@TylerJamesLogsdon

when Thom Yorke said "Can - Future Days always, that's how you should start every morning," I took that seriously.
