I woke up this morning (thank you God), wanting to hear this, and thank mr. zimmerman for writing and singing and sharing his talent and vision. He's been a beacon of light and truth in a dark world for over half a century, and he made a ton of money doing it his way.
Selling his catalogue and cashing out last year is appropriate, but I wonder if he has said everything he wanted to say.

I had the most amazing experience with this album. Basically we were camping and only had 3 CDs. John Wesley Harding, The Black Keys - Chulahoma, and Beastie Boys - Ill Communication. Lol I know it's a weird collection but welcome to millennial music taste lol. We were camped way up a logging road in the North Cascades, beautiful blue sky day in February, probably 4 inches of snow on the ground. About an hour before sunset I took acid for the first time. We had a huge camp fire, blasted tunes all night and watched the sun rise. Words cannot describe how incredibly beautiful it was. Some albums are just meant for a certain time in your life you know? I have so many songs that will always remind me of particular moments in my life and I'm very thankful for that.

It’s one thing to write two or three great songs that people will remember, but Dylan, on the other hand, has written dozens of absolute masterpieces. What an amazing artist and poet he is. I understand that not everyone is going to like or understand Dylan. Probably most geniuses are like that. Still, I’m glad I’m one of the people who gets him.

I love all of of Dylan's music, however I really Like his earlier songs. I spent a quite of bit of time in Woodstock in the 60's. One day I wanted to meet Dylan so I drove up his driveway. I was met by the older man to the right of Dylan on the album cover. He was crazed and started pounding on my window to the point I thought he would break it. I got out of there fast. That's my closet encounter with Bob Dylan.

Bob dylan mentions glass in several songs on this album, including this one. But what is the glass he speaks of exactly? “I put my fingers against the glass and bowed my head and cried.” He also mentions glass in the immigrant song where he ends the song by saying “whose visions in the final end must shatter like the glass..” I was thinking he might be referring to a mirror? But he’s seems to go out of his way to not specify what kind of glass it is because he loves to keep the listener thinking and on their toes. What do you guys think?

This song has no apparent connection to the historical St. Augustine, who was not a martyr. The few details we are given do not correspond to any events or themes I am aware of in the life of the saint. Of course that doesn't really matter, because dreams don't have to be true to history. Still, it seems strange that Dylan has put such a major cultural figure into the song apparently almost randomly. However, it is interesting to consider whether Dylan might have been thinking of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose story is told in Acts. In the song, the martyr cries out a "sad complaint" in a "voice without restraint." Immediately before his martyrdom, Saint Stephen was preaching in the Temple, angering the crowd when he said, "O stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so also do you." One of the ringleaders in the death of Stephen by stoning was Saul, an observant Jew, well-trained in the Hebrew Scriptures, who later became a Christian and changed his name to Paul. (His letters to various people and churches make up about a quarter of the New Testament.) In this song, the singer dreams he is one of the ones who helps to kill the martyr. If Dylan was thinking about Stephen, and not really Augustine, the singer is then cast in the role of Saul/Paul. This seems notable in light of the fact that Dylan, a Jew, very publicly and rather scandalously (to many of his fans) became a Christian in the later 70s. For a few years he even preached between songs at his shows. I do not want to read too much into this song. Still, I would say that it makes much more sense if Dylan was referring to Stephen and Saul here. I think he probably was. Naming Augustine may well have been a deliberate misdirection.

There's nothing that says st augustine is THE martyr referred to in the song. They're just making the statement that the modern world doesn't have a martyr (whatever that means), but that doesn't mean they're saying that they are that martyr.
I would say if you are familiar with some of augustines writings you might thing there is some sort of connection to the character in the song.

I have read his Confessions, which is of course by far his best-known work, as well as parts of City of God and his Commentary on the Psalms. I have also read Peter Brown's excellent biography of Augustine. As I said before, I do not see any connection between the historical Augustine and the character in this song. Also, Augustine is explicitly THE martyr referred to in the song (although he was not in fact a martyr). "I dreamed I saw St. Augustine alive with fiery breath. And I dreamed I was among the ones that put him out to death."

@David Carpenter in the song it says "there are no martyrs among YE now." He's referring to the "kings and queens" (which might mean the average person but who knows). And in the song he does become a martyr but to me what dylan is trying to say is that St Augustine would be martyred in the present time, even if he wasn't in the past. And this contrast is representative of our fallen modern world.
Regarding St Augustine's writings, I have only read Confessions. I think a common theme is guilt and shame, which is also a theme of the song (felt by the narrator at the end). Also, St. Augustine also wrote a lot of generic observational things about the world. It seems the character in the song is doing the same by observing and commenting on the state of the modern world. But the modern world is unwilling to hear his innocent observations. To me this seems to reflect the idea that people might react against those who are trying to help them overcome their flaws, and in their emotions will kill the messenger.
These are just my thoughts. I feel it is open to interpretation, but I don't really believe St. Augustine is mentioned arbitrarily or as a red herring. That just doesn't seem right to me.

Very Interesting take. I heard at the time Dylan created these songs he was immersed in the New Testament. Poets and composers do not concern themselves with authenticity. He might have used Au-gus-stine because it fit the melody he imagined. St Stephen's story might have been his inspiration, but try singing "I dreamed I saw St. Ste-ee-ven..." Just doesn't work. Same with Tom Paine character, or John Wesley Harding (he could have used John Hardin, or John Wesley, other names used in folksongs about a famous outlaw). These names are symbols - Tom Paine evokes a fighter for liberty, justice, freedom from tyranny. And here's Tom Paine commanding his slave girl to heel. This kind of allegory works on the listener even without our fully grasping it. Dylan's work affects me the way written poetry never could.

Prob a real dream Bob had about a real figure, who Bob imagined speaking to the lost souls of those in hell, because they had given up on themselves , but then the artist and poet and prophet in Bob imagines he himself responsible for St. Augustine's death, which of course did not happen, but poetically and spiritually makes perfect sense. Idk about the real timeline, but maybe Bob taking responsibility for the death of his friend, Richard Farina, or maybe, and this is a real stretch, the death of Jesus . Just wild speculation, tho. In his book 'Revolution in the Air: The Songs of Bob Dylan, Volume 1', Clinton Heylin suggests it's not specifically about anyone, but early 20th century union organiser Joe Hill (who was effectively judicially murdered for a crime he didn't commit; shades of Reuben 'Hurricane' Carter there, though the latter wasn't executed) and Dylan himself may be the ones; Dylan for his unwanted 'voice of a generation' tag perhaps inspiring the line 'no martyr is among ye now'.

The famous song about Joe Hill begins with a similar lyric...

"I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I 'But Joe, you're ten years dead'
'I never died' said he"

I met her on the coldest day ever at 50th anniversary commemoration of 🩸 Bloody Sunday on 30/1/22. She was lovely. She was on crutches as she told me she fell off a bike cycling round NI. She’s from Cork but was doing some other TV programme at the time, still on crutches in this episode, she was wearing a big coat like me and had a mask on. She said how TF did u recognise me. I said your eyes. I asked her for a selfie. I’d never asked anyone before for one. She had to do it as my hands were so cold. V lovely woman.
