Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem
[unknown] Lyrics

Oh little town of bethlehem

Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Yet in they dark streets shineth, the everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above
While mortals sleep the angels keep their watch of wondering love
Oh morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth.
And praises sing to God the king, and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven
No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin
Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in.

Oh holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today
We hear the Christmas angels, the great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us, our lord Emanuel.

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of “Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem”, the writer paints a picture of the city lying in a dreamless sleep with the silent stars watching over it. Amidst the silence and darkness of the streets, the everlasting light continues to shine. This light symbolizes the hope and fear of all people through the years, which are met in Bethlehem as the birthplace of Jesus Christ - the savior of mankind. The second verse speaks of the angels keeping watch over the newly born Christ, while the morning stars herald his holy birth and sing praises to God. This verse is a reminder of the divine nature of the birth and the significance of Christ’s coming for the salvation of the world. In the third verse, God’s wondrous gift of salvation is silently imparted to human hearts, bringing the blessings of heaven upon those who receive Christ. Even though the world is full of sin, those who willingly accept Jesus and follow Him discover the true meaning of Christmas - Christ entering into their lives. The last verse of “Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem” is a prayer to God to send His Holy Child to cast out sin and to be born anew in the hearts of believers. The song ends with a plea for Christ to abide with us as our Lord Emanuel.

I couldn't agree more. It is written and stated that our Lord remains as is as was and shall never change with the times. His tributes should also remain unchanged. The voice of Nat King Cole ignites a fire in my Soul along with burning presence of the Son of God. Merry Christmas !
