Teardrop
´ó¾Ù½ø¹¥(Massive Attack) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love, love is a verb,
Love is a doing word,
Fearless on my breath.
Gentle impulsion,
Shakes me, makes me lighter,
Fearless on my breath.
Teardrop on the fire,
Fearless on my breath.

Night, night after day,
Black flowers blossom,
Fearless on my breath.
Black flowers blossom,
Fearless on my breath,
Teardrop on the fire,
Fearless on my...

Water is my eye,
Most faithful mirror.
Fearless on my breath,
Teardrop on the fire,
I've a confession.
Fearless on my breath,
Most faithful mirror,
Fearless on my breath,
Teardrop on the fire,
Fearless on my breath.

You're stumbling a little,
You're stumbling a little.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Teardrop" by Massive Attack are open to interpretation. The opening lines, "Love, love is a verb, Love is a doing word, Fearless on my breath," suggest that love is an action, not just a feeling. The singer seems to be in control of this love and is willing to take risks for it. The line "Fearless on my breath" reinforces the idea of courage.

The chorus begins with "Teardrop on the fire." This may be a metaphor for an emotional release, akin to crying. Again, the singer seems to be fearless in their willingness to let go of these emotions. The line "Gentle impulsion, Shakes me, makes me lighter" follows this, suggesting that there is a release of weight from the singer's shoulders when they allow themselves to let go.

The second verse begins with "Night after day, Black flowers blossom," which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the beauty that emerges from darkness. The singer seems to be at peace with this idea, remaining "Fearless on [their] breath" as they navigate the struggles of life. The line "Water is my eye, Most faithful mirror" reinforces the idea of self-reflection, suggesting that water is a metaphor for the singer's inner self.

Overall, the lyrics of "Teardrop" are open to interpretation. However, there is a sense of courage and fearlessness throughout the song, as well as a willingness to confront and accept the emotions that come with love and life.

My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Darius, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life..

For those who don't know, this song is composed by the lead singer of Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraser, at the time she wrote the lyrics for this song, she was dating Jeff Buckley that unfortunately happened to die of drowning in that same period, i guess no more explanation is needed, this song represents grief in all forms, the melody, the lyrics and the overall energy of the song.

Powerful I’ve only ever written a song before losing the one I love and care about but never after it’s too painful to write about it

She wasn't dating Jeff Buckley at the time. He was in a relationship with Joan Wasser, to whom he had recently proposed.
