Let's Dance
À×ÃÉ˹(Ramones) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey baby won't you take a chance?
Say that you'll let me have this dance?
Well let's dance; let's dance.
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too.
Any old dance that you wanna do.
Well let's dance; let's dance.
Hey baby yeah you thrill the soul, hold me close, don't you let me go.
Well let's dance.
Hey baby if you're all alone, baby you'll let me walk you home.
Let's dance.
Hey baby yeah you swing it right, yes I know that tonight's the night.

Let's dance.

Overall Meaning

The Ramones' song "Let's Dance" is a high-energy blast of rock n' roll, and the lyrics are all about urging a potential dance partner to take a chance and hit the dance floor. The opening lines of the song immediately establish the tone, with the singer asking the unnamed person if they're willing to take a chance on dancing with him. The chorus, which repeats several times throughout the song, simply urges the listener to dance: "Well let's dance; let's dance."

The verse then presents a series of potential dances that the pair could try out together: "We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too. Any old dance that you wanna do." This sense of freedom and spontaneity is key to the song's appeal - it's not about adhering to a particular dance style or following rigid conventions, but just letting loose and having fun with someone who lights up your soul.

As the song goes on, the lyrics become more flirtatious and intimate. The singer tells their partner that they thrill his soul and urges them to hold him close so they won't let go. The offer to walk the listener home suggests a level of trust and connection, as does the line about swinging it right. The song ends with one last exhortation to dance, now with the added emphasis that this is the night to seize the moment and enjoy each other's company.

@@DJDanceClassic There are actually two different versions of what happened in the great book "Texas Flood". In one version, SRV quit; in the other, Bowie fired him. Either could be true; Stevie didn't take a lot of crap from people, and Bowie could be a prima donna asshole.
SRV, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon all said that once Bowie decided he wanted SRV to play on his upcoming album and Stevie agreed , Bowie immediately asked him to join the tour as Bowie's guitarist.
As part of Stevie being in the tour band, Double Trouble would open a select number of shows. Of course, nothing was ever signed to confirm that, and trusting Bowie, Stevie went ahead and began rehearsals with the tour band.
As the start date for the tour got closer, Layton and Shannon said they received no specific tour dates for them to open for Bowie, and Bowie's people would not return phone calls. Layton and Shannon finally realized it wasn't going to happen.
At some point, Stevie was also told that he was not going to be allowed to mention Double Trouble or his own music in interviews before or during the tour. Fed up, Stevie said he quit the tour as the band was about to board the bus for their first flight; Bowie's camp continued to say he was fired, for what they don't specify. Stevie showed up and played at all album sessions and tour rehearsals.

Stevie is quoted as saying he never intended to be no more than a sideman for Bowie, and that he had an album about to be released to promote on his own. Apparently, he expected that when Double Trouble opened for Bowie, they'd play songs from the album to promote it.
Double Trouble's first album was released shortly before the Bowie tour started, and the band launched a massive tour of their own to promote it. The rest is history.

RIP MR. BOWIE. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING JOY TO THE WORLD.

"I sometimes forget
that I was created for Joy.

My mind is too busy.
My Heart is too heavy
for me to remember
that I have been
called to dance
the Sacred dance of life.

I was created to smile
To Love
To be lifted up
And to lift others up.

O’ Sacred One
Untangle my feet
from all that ensnares.
Free my soul.
That we might Dance
and that our dancing
might be contagious."
