Pick Me Up On Your Way Down

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now you're puttin' on the style
And you've never once looked back
At your home across the track.
You're the gossip of the town
But my heart can still be found
Where you tossed it to the ground.
Pick me up on your way down.
Pick me up on your way down,
When you're blue and all alone
When their glamor starts to bore you,
Come on back where you belong.
You may be their pride and joy,
But they'll find another toy
And they'll take away your crown,
Pick me up on your way down.
They have changed your attitude,
Made you haughty and so rude,
Your new friends can take the blame,
Underneath you're still the same.
When you learn these things are true
I'll be waiting here for you,
As you tumble to the ground
Pick me up on your way down.
The song "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down" by Martina McBride tells a story of heartbreak and desperation. The singer is begging for the attention and love of an ex-lover who has moved on to new friends and a different lifestyle. The tone is melancholic and the lyrics are filled with longing and sadness.
The opening line "You were mine for just a while" sets the tone for the rest of the song. It is clear that the singer's relationship with the subject was brief and perhaps not fully reciprocated. The second line "Now you're puttin' on the style" suggests that the subject of the song has changed in some way and is now living a life of glamour and showing off. The singer is left behind, watching from across the tracks as their ex-lover enjoys a newfound success.
The chorus is a plea for the subject to come back to the singer. "Pick me up on your way down" is a desperate cry for attention and love. The singer believes that the subject will eventually tire of their new friends and lifestyle and will need someone to turn to. The lyrics are filled with bitterness and sadness, but there is also a sense of hope that the subject will eventually remember the love they once shared.
Overall, "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down" is a poignant and emotional song about heartbreak and longing. The lyrics are profound and powerful, and Martina McBride's voice adds a haunting quality to the already melancholic tune.

A true classic with awesome lyrics and harmonies.I first remember hearing this in 1964 when I was 2 years old.
@RickSrFlood
yes...I remember first hearing it around the same time.....I was 7...my parents would go to their friends house Saturday night to play cards and dance to country music records...this was one of them......those days were sooooooooo wonderful
@mannyruiz1954
That steel guitar swings. That's how it's done boys and girls.
@Den-lh6sc
Yes sir real country
@routeflasher
In the words of Eddie Stubbs - an absolute clinic on how to play steel. Kudos to Jimmy Day
@joemysterymusic
Awesome, awesome and awesome again. One of the greatest country songs ever written- melody and lyrics. It doesn't get any better and puts to shame the guys wearing cowboy hats today and pretending to be country singers.
@Den-lh6sc
Very true

Classic REAL COUNTRY AND WESTERN....... From a new American Citizen....don;t take this for granted if your born in USA Americans do
@terryboren4186
This version is so country. Thanks again Mama for all the times these songs got us thru
@QuadMochaMatti
This is the real country, not the garbage that it has continuously devolved into; perhaps beginning as far back as sometime in the '80s. As an Xer born in the early seventies, I remember being disappointed with how big Alabama, etc. got – feeling they weren't legit, when all I wanted to hear were the classics.
