Mary Jane
Âó¼ÓµÙ˹(Megadeth) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Forgive me father for I have sinned
I'm a child of the air
I'm a witch of the wind
And I'm still wide awake...

Mary Jane

From the earth, up through the trees
I can hear her calling me

Her voice rides on the breeze
Oh, it's haunting me

No, I can't get away
No, there's no escape (I'm going crazy)

If I know I'm going crazy
I must not be insane

Beware, my friends
As you pass by
As you are now
So once was I

As I am now
So you must be
Prepare, my friends
To follow me

Forgive me father
For I have sinned

I'm a child of the air
I'm a witch of the wind

Fingers gripped around my brain
No control, my mind is lame

I'm in the astral plane
And I'll never be the same

Never, never, never, never, never, never
Never, never, never, never, never

Beware, my friends
As you pass by
As you are now
So once was I

As I am now
So you must be
Prepare, my friends
To follow me

Hurts so bad
I can't breathe

Prepare to follow me...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Mary Jane" by Megadeth tell the story of a man who is struggling with addiction. The opening lines of "forgive me father for I have sinned" suggest that the singer is seeking absolution for his drug use. He then goes on to describe himself as a "child of the air" and a "witch of the wind," suggesting that he feels a sense of detachment from the physical world because of his drug use. He hears the voice of "Mary Jane" calling to him from the natural world and can't escape her haunting presence.

The second verse continues with the theme of the natural world calling to him, as he hears Mary Jane's voice "riding on the breeze." The chorus repeats the line "prepare my friends to follow me," suggesting that he wants others to experience the same sense of freedom that he feels when he is using drugs. The bridge of the song describes the physical effects of drug use, with "fingers gripped around my brain" and "no control, my mind is lame."

Overall, the lyrics of "Mary Jane" provide a powerful insight into the mindset of someone struggling with addiction. The singer feels as though he is "going crazy," but also believes that he is more in touch with the natural world because of his drug use. The repeated call to "prepare my friends to follow me" showcases the potentially dangerous allure of addiction and highlights the importance of seeking help before it's too late.

Mike M Cannabis is a drug just like alcohol. It’s a less harmful drug than others, but still a drug. Lupe mentioned that because Rick was a heavy hard drug user. When he died, the blood tests showed traces of cocaine and a bunch of other drugs that would make a pharmacy jealous.
