Drifting
ɯÀ¿ËÀÍ¿ËÀ¼ Sarah Mclachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've been gone for so long all that you know
Has been shuffled aside as you bask in the glow
Of the beautiful strangers that whisper your name
Do they fill up the emptiness

Larger than life is your fiction in a universe made up of one

'Cause you have been drifting for so long
I know you don't want to come down
But somewhere below you there's people who love you
And they're waiting for you to come home, please come home

You walk in a room and the world stops to stare
You mesmerize all who are caught in the glare
Of the spotlight that follows wherever you go
Does it light up the emptiness

Larger than life is your fiction in a universe made up of one

You have been drifting for so long
I know you don't want to come down

But somewhere below you there's people who love you
And they're ready for you to come home, please come home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's "Drifting" tells the story of someone who has been away for a long time and has become detached from reality. The first verse talks about how the person has been gone for so long that everything they knew has been pushed aside, and now they're surrounded by beautiful strangers who whisper their name. The second verse continues the theme of detachment, with the person being larger than life in their own fictional universe. The chorus pleads for the person to come back to reality and return home to the people who love them.

The song seems to be about the trap of fame and success, and how it can make a person feel isolated and disconnected from their true self. The lines "Of the beautiful strangers that whisper your name / Do they fill up the emptiness" suggest that the person is seeking validation and attention from others to fill a void inside of them. Similarly, the line "Does it light up the emptiness" in the second verse suggests that the person is using the spotlight of fame to distract themselves from their own feelings of emptiness and loneliness.

As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the person is not only physically distant from home, but also mentally and emotionally distant. The line "somewhere below you there's people who love you / And they're waiting for you to come home, please come home" is a powerful plea to return to reality, to return to the people and the life that truly matter.

Overall, "Drifting" is a hauntingly beautiful piece that explores the dark side of fame and the longing for connection and belonging.

Super respectable how safe you guys were and how much you stressed it. A lot of people are reckless or cocky in these scenarios and it never leads to anything good.

Safe? Dude they're street drifting on a public road.... Even if you put lookouts out miles ahead, there's no guarantee that the lookout won't miss a single car. Especially with how ADHD everyone is nowadays.
