Everybody Knows
Ô¼º²´«ÆæJohn Legend Lyrics

It gets harder every day, but I can't seem to shake the pain
I'm trying to find the words to say, please say
It's written all over my face, I can't
Function the same when you're not here
I'm calling your name and no one's there
And I hope one day you'll see nobody has it easy,
I still can't believe you found somebody new
But I wish you the best, I guess.
Cause everybody knows, that nobody really knows
How to make it work, or how to ease the hurt
We've heard it all before, that everybody knows
How to make it right, I wish we gave it one more try
One more try
One more try
'Cause everybody knows, but nobody really knows

I don't care what the people say
They brought it all in anyway
Baby don't fill up your head with he-said, she-said
It seems like you just don't know
The radio's on, you tuning me out,
I'm trying to speak, you're turning me down
And I know one day you'll see nobody has it easy,
I still can't believe you found somebody new
But I wish you the best, I guess.
'Cause everybody knows, that nobody really knows
How to make it work, or how to ease the hurt
We've heard it all before, that everybody knows
How to make it right, I wish we gave it one more try
One more try
One more try
One more try
'Cause everybody knows, but nobody really knows

Oh I wish you'd understand
Oh, just an ordinary man
Wish that we'd have known
Everybody knows, but nobody really knows
And I know one day you'll see, nobody has it easy
I still can't believe you found somebody new
I wish you the best, I guess.

'Cause everybody knows, that nobody really knows
How to make it work, or how to ease the hurt
We've heard it all before, that everybody knows
How to make it right, I wish we gave it one more try
One more try
One more try

One more try
'Cause everybody knows, but nobody really knows

Overall Meaning

In the lyrics of John Legend's song "Everybody Knows," the artist reflects on the difficulty of moving on from a past relationship while acknowledging that everyone struggles to find happiness and stability in their love lives. The opening lines convey the pain and frustration of trying to move on from a former lover, while struggling to find the words to express the hurt. Despite trying to cope, the singer acknowledges the difficulty of functioning without their former partner and the loneliness of calling out their name, only to be met with silence.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the universality of heartbreak and challenges the idea that anyone truly knows how to make a relationship work. The artist laments that no matter how much advice one receives or how many experiences they go through, finding true love continues to be elusive for many. The repeated phrase, "Everybody knows, but nobody really knows," speaks to the irony of the collective experience of heartbreak, and the frustration that comes with trying to make sense of it.

The concluding verse addresses the end of a relationship and the sense of regret that often follows, as the singer longs for one more chance with their former partner. However, the song ultimately ends on a bittersweet note, as the artist accepts that everyone must face their own struggles and that it is impossible to truly know what is best for others, much less ourselves.

I had to be that guy, sorry.
Lyrics:
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah, when you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

@LargeAndUngrateful

It’s only the 10th or 11th plague in my lifetime and I’m only 35... I expect them to become more frequent and less treatable until the population is significantly reduced all over.
