Same Mistake
ղķÊ˲¼ÀÊÌØJames Blunt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So while I'm turning in my sheets
And once again I cannot sleep
Walk out the door and up the street
Look at the stars beneath my feet
Remember rights that I did wrong
So here I go

Hello, hello

There is no place I cannot go
My mind is muddy but
My heart is heavy does it show
I lose the track that loses me
So here I go

Uhuh uhuh uhuh

And so I sent some men to fight
And one came back at dead of night
Said he'd seen my enemy
Said he looked just like me
So I set out to cut myself
And here I go

Uhuh uhuh uhuh

I'm not calling for a second chance
I'm screaming at the top of my voice
Give me reason, but don't give me choice
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake again

Uhuh uhuh uhuh

And maybe someday we will face
And maybe talk but not just speak
Don't buy the promises 'Cause
There are no promises I keep
And my reflection troubles me
So here I go

Uhuh uhuh uhuh

I'm not calling for a second chance
I'm screaming at the top of my voice
Give me reason, but don't give me choice
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake

I'm not calling for a second chance
I'm screaming at the top of my voice
Give me reason, but don't give me choice
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake again

Uhuh uhuh uhuh

Uhuh uhuh uhuh
So while I'm turning in my sheets
Uhuh uhuh uhuh
And once again I cannot sleep
Uhuh uhuh uhuh
Walk out the door and up the street
Uhuh uhuh uhuh
Look at the stars
Uhuh uhuh uhuh
Look at the stars falling down
Uhuh uhuh uhuh
And I wonder where

Uhuh uhuh uhuh
Did I go wrong?

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of James Blunt's "Same Mistake" describe a familiar scene of someone turning in their sheets, unable to sleep, and leaving the house. The singer reminisces about the rights he did wrong and the resulting mistakes he made. He acknowledges that his mind is unclear, but his heart is heavy. He describes the feeling of losing track of himself and his desires, resulting in him repeating past errors in his life.

Blunt uses the metaphor of sending men to war to represent his struggles with his own identity. When one of the men came back and said he had seen the enemy, who looked just like him, Blunt realizes that the enemy is within himself. In response, he sets out to cut himself and repeats the phrase "here I go" to emphasize his determination to confront and overcome the problem.

Blunt's repeated plea for reason but not choice in the chorus suggests that he is willing to face the consequences of his actions, but he does not want to be given the temptation or the chance to make the same mistakes again. The song ends with Blunt questioning himself, wondering where he went wrong and expressing his desire to retrace his steps and find a new way.

Saw the world turning in my sheets
And once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street;
Look at the stars beneath my feet.
Remember rights that I did wrong, so here I go.

Hello, hello. There is no place I cannot go.
My mind is muddy but my heart is heavy. Does it show?
I lose the track that loses me, so here I go.

And so I sent some men to fight,
And one came back at dead of night.
Said he'd seen my enemy.
Said he looked just like me,
So I set out to cut myself and here I go.

I'm not calling for a second chance,
I'm screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don't give me choice.
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake again.

And maybe someday we will meet,
And maybe talk and not just speak.
Don't buy the promises
'Cause there are no promises I keep.
And my reflection troubles me, so here I go.

I'm not calling for a second chance,
I'm screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don't give me choice.
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake,

I'm not calling for a second chance,
I'm screaming at the top of my voice.
Give me reason but don't give me choice.
'Cause I'll just make the same mistake again.

Saw the world turning in my sheets
And once again I cannot sleep.
Walk out the door and up the street;
Look at the stars.
Look at the stars fall down.
And wonder where did I go wrong.

how can he sing this all the way through with out crying??/ I can't listen to it without crying.  one of the most truest best songs ever ever!!!

He does say he looses the track that looses him. That’d explain the ambiguous nature of his art; saying things that would actually disrupt the display that he’s making with the music wouldn’t be viable, thus for him to be able and play the song without such reaction, he’s looses himself in the process...but it’s clear to me that he’s also making it as a reference to the subject he’s talking about...he lets us make the decision about how it’s should be interpreted as, but for he can’t since for him there one clear meaning to it...
