Born in Yalova to Turkish immigrant parents from Skopje, Macedonia, Ferah got her first guitar when she was in the first year in boarding at Bursa Namık Sözeri High School. She took lessons on the acoustic guitar, and during her second year she hired a studio with her friends and formed the group Pegasus. The group had their first stage experience during a rock festival in Bursa, in 1987. After a while, Pegasus disbanded. In 1988 with her four friends, Ferah formed Volvox, which was named after a microorganism that they had encountered in a biology lesson.
After a period during which she attended Middle East Technical University, studying economics in Ankara, she moved to Istanbul, where she attended classes on English language and literature at the Istanbul University. For two years she performed in various bars with Volvox, until they disbanded in 1994.
She released her first solo album, Kadın in 1996, and has gone on to release a total of six full studio albums, the last one being Benim Adım Orman, released in 2009. In addition to composing the music and writing the lyrics of every song in her albums, she occasionally sings on stage cover versions of work by artists of similar vocal qualities and style, such as Amy Lee and Skin.
On her third album, Perdeler, she collaborated with the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica.
Ferah's current group consists of Buket Doran (bass guitar), Metin Türkcan (electric guitar), Aykan İlkan (drums), and Ozan Tügen (keyboard), who have been performing with her in studio and on stage since her third album, Perdeler.

Gel bir parça al ekmeğimden suyumdan
Ben zaten düşmüşüm kaldırımlar yatağım olmuş
Gel bir de sen vur, hadi gel bir de sen vur
Ben zaten düşmüşüm içim dışım korku dolmuş
Gel bir de sen vur, hadi gel
Nasıl olsa alıştım ben bu sert rüzgârlara
Delgeç gibi deleceksin sen de ruhumu
Biliyorum durma gel
Bir de sen vur
Bir de sen vur
Gel bir de sen vur
Bir de sen vur
Gel bir parçam ol kanımdan canımdan
Gel bir parça al ekmeğimden suyumdan
Ben zaten düşmüşüm kaldırımlar yatağım olmuş
Gel bir de sen vur, hadi gel bir de sen vur
Ben zaten düşmüşüm içim dışım korku dolmuş
Gel bir de sen vur, hadi gel
Nasıl olsa alıştım ben bu sert rüzgarlara
Bu sert iklimli ıssız hayata
Delgeç gibi deleceksin sen de ruhumu
Biliyorum durma gel
Bir de sen vur
Hadi gel bir de sen vur
Gel bir de sen vur
Hadi gel bir de sen vur
Nasıl olsa alıştım ben bu sert rüzgarlara
Bu sert iklimli ıssız hayata
Delgeç gibi deleceksin sen de ruhumu
Biliyorum durma gel
Bir de sen vur
Hadi gel bir de sen vur
Gel bir de sen vur
Hadi gel bir de sen vur
The song "Delgeç" by Şebnem Ferah is a powerful expression of loneliness, pain, and the desire for someone to come and break through the walls around one's heart. The lyrics speak of the singer's current condition of feeling lost and fallen, taking comfort in the harshness of her environment, but also desperately seeking someone who can understand and share the burden. She invites this person to become a part of herself, to take from her everything she has, and to also hurt her emotionally - "come and hit me too." The repeated line "gel bir de sen vur" (come and hit me too) expresses this desire for someone to share in the pain and suffering, to break through the numbness and vulnerability that she feels.
The song's title "Delgeç" translates to "escape valve" or "bypass," both of which suggest a release or a way out from something. The metaphorical use of "delgeç" implies an outlet for one's emotions, a way to deal with pain and suffering, and to move on. Additionally, the image of a "delgeç" evokes a sense of toughness and resilience, as if the singer is saying that she can withstand anything that comes her way.
The lyrics use a lot of emotive language to convey the feelings of the singer. The phrase "ben zaten düşmüşüm" (I've already fallen) is particularly evocative, suggesting a person who has experienced hardships and setbacks, and now feels immobilized by them. The repetition of "gel" (come), in addition to the commanding tone of "vur" (hit) create a sense of urgency and desperation, as if the singer is calling out for someone to connect with her in a deeply intimate and painful way.
Overall, "Delgeç" is a deeply emotional song that conveys the complexity of human emotions and the desperation for connection in times of loneliness and pain.
