Born in Yalova to Turkish immigrant parents from Skopje, Macedonia, Ferah got her first guitar when she was in the first year in boarding at Bursa Namık Sözeri High School. She took lessons on the acoustic guitar, and during her second year she hired a studio with her friends and formed the group Pegasus. The group had their first stage experience during a rock festival in Bursa, in 1987. After a while, Pegasus disbanded. In 1988 with her four friends, Ferah formed Volvox, which was named after a microorganism that they had encountered in a biology lesson.
After a period during which she attended Middle East Technical University, studying economics in Ankara, she moved to Istanbul, where she attended classes on English language and literature at the Istanbul University. For two years she performed in various bars with Volvox, until they disbanded in 1994.
She released her first solo album, Kadın in 1996, and has gone on to release a total of six full studio albums, the last one being Benim Adım Orman, released in 2009. In addition to composing the music and writing the lyrics of every song in her albums, she occasionally sings on stage cover versions of work by artists of similar vocal qualities and style, such as Amy Lee and Skin.
On her third album, Perdeler, she collaborated with the Finnish cello rock band Apocalyptica.
Ferah's current group consists of Buket Doran (bass guitar), Metin Türkcan (electric guitar), Aykan İlkan (drums), and Ozan Tügen (keyboard), who have been performing with her in studio and on stage since her third album, Perdeler.

Sana hiç değmedi
Gözümden damlayan yaş
Denizi bulmadı
Bir sokak gördüm rüyalarımda gecelerce
Hiç sana çıkmadı
Sadece yarım saat tutuştuk elele
Düşünüyorum
Ne kadar sevmiş olabilirim?
Düşünüyorum
Sen, ben, gece ve bir yol
Başka bir şey
Yok elimde hafızamda
Düşünüyorum
Ne kadar yer etmiş olabilir?
İstiklal caddesi kadar
İstiklal caddesi kadar
Anları birer, birer
Topladım sakladım
Tarihin ortasında
Gelecek aradım
Hücreme girdin, dokundun hücrelerime
Buluttum, damladım
Cümleler kaçtı dağıldı dört bir tarafa
Sadece noktayım, noktayım, noktayım
Düşünüyorum
Ne kadar sevmiş olabilirim?
Düşünüyorum
Sen, ben, gece ve bir yol
Başka bir şey
Yok elimde hafızamda
Düşünüyorum
Ne kadar yer etmiş olabilir?
İstiklal caddesi kadar
İstiklal caddesi kadar
Düşünüyorum
Ne kadar sevmiş olabilirim?

The lyrics of Şebnem Ferah's song İstiklal Caddesi Kadar describe the intense emotions of a love that penetrates the depths of the heart and soul. The opening lines talk about shedding tears that never find the sea and the touch of someone that has never reached the forehead. The singer then talks about a street that appears in her dreams almost every night, but never with her lover's presence. The only time they ever touched for half an hour, time seemed to be against them, never stopping.
The singer questions the depth of their love, wondering how much they could have loved each other, and how much of a permanent mark it could have left on their memories. The singer has nothing else in her hand except for the memories that she holds in her mind, and as the lines go, they are as valuable as İstiklal Caddesi - the most famous street in Istanbul, Turkey - which is a symbol of freedom and independence for the Turkish people.
Towards the end of the song, the singer says that the memories of their love will stay with her forever, just like a dot in the sentence of her life, emphasizing the permanence of their love in the story of her life.
