Название «Високосный год» возникло в 1988 году, когда будущий лидер группы Илья Калинников писал песню с таким названием. Песня не была закончена, но в 1990 году Калинников создал группу с таким названием.
В состав коллектива «Високосный год» вошли Илья Калинников (вокал, гитара, автор песен), Дмитрий Гугучкин (соло-гитара), Илья Сосницкий (клавиши), Павел Серяков (бас-гитара). В 2000-м году к группе присоединяется — Дмитрий Кукушкин (баян, гитара).
