Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Песня о госпитале" ("Song about the Hospital") by Vladimir Vysotsky tells the story of a man who used to live a privileged life with his parents in Arbat but ends up in the hospital bedridden and bandaged. He expresses his hopelessness and resentment towards his situation, as he witnesses the death of his neighbor on the right and the constant mockery of his neighbor on the left. He doubts the doctors' treatment plan and is constantly belittled, even in his dreams where he is reminded of his missing leg. The man is consumed by anger towards his situation and feelings of inadequacy.

The song reflects the harsh reality of life in a hospital, where people are stripped of their dignity and independence. The singer's downward spiral is portrayed through the contrast between his past life and his current one. The loss of a limb serves as a metaphor for losing his identity and sense of self-worth. He is reliant on others, including the nursing staff and doctors, who sometimes seem cruel and dismissive of his pain. Through the interactions with his neighbors, the singer realizes that his suffering is not unique, and he is not alone in his misery.

Overall, "Песня о госпитале" is a poignant and powerful statement on the fragility of human life and the human spirit. It highlights the resilience of the human condition while also acknowledging our vulnerabilities and limitations.
