Mozart's student Franz Xaver Sussmayr finished it from Mozarts notes. You can definitely hear a difference after bar 8. it may have been so different had mozart finished it himself.

I've sung this piece, and it is VERY moving & VERY powerful at the same time. However, i noticed a lot of folks, making rather "negative remarks" about Beethoven. Granted this is a wonderful choir piece to sing, especially with a 100 voice choir at that. But Beethoven & Bach, along with Chopin, had some WONDERFUL pieces themselves. So in my opinion, they were ALL classical masterminds, of there time.

Mozart and beethoven, One a child prodigy who died young, and the other a man who went deaf but still composed great music. They were in my opinion the best composers who ever lived. Their music is unique and wonderful for each of them.

Exactly at 0:47 was the last that Mozart had written and where Sussmayer started! But it is known they were discussing the music at his sick-bed, so it is very likely that he might have been dictating to Sussmayer. For Sussmayer it was common practice to work out sketches (like he did with the "Zauberflote" on their way to Prague).

everyone in my family finds me weird that I listen to classical music. I am a gigantic metal fan but classic music like mozart and beethoven are just as awesome. :D they at least know how to play their instruments and compose things. you don't see that often anymore now.

My marching band played this song, along with Symph. No 25, And a Don Giovanni and Eine Kleine Knoch Mixture-overture renamed Eine Kliene Giovanni. Beautiful stuff. :')

I heard the Directv commercial come on and loved the music in the background. I asked ChaCha what it was, and they told me it was Requiem Mass in D Minor, so I looked it up here on YouTube. I found out a lot of history about this piece since the day I looked it up. I love this <3

@finnhumble Yes this is a piece of bigger requiem. Requiem was a term for post mortem mass for deceased person(s). It was given in very specific form. Big music composers in past used to create music for such purpose, named Requiems. Some music is for general purpose, while others are written for particular important and powerful person. I even think, this Mozart's masterpiece was composed for someone, however he died before finishing it.

@thelightisahead Thing is, I think that if Mozart had no imput into the vocals after 00:48, which for me is when it becomes truely mindblowing and dark.. Then this tune isn't a disappointment, but a sorrowful expression by Sussmeyer about the sad tale of Mozarts death.. As I don't know that to be the truth, the tune to me still remains a masterpiece:) Great info though, thanks:)

in my opinion Bach is the greatest composer. there wouldn't be Mozart today if it wasn't for Bach, Mozart studied his music and in ways got his styles from Bach

lol, I can assure you I have no problem giving Mozart credit! Mozart wrote the first 10 bars (or so, I think) and Sussmayr used solely this thematic material to complete it. It's hard to believe because it's done so well, but it is the truth, I can assure you - there's no reason why such a lie would come up, as no one would want to suggest Sussmayr finished it. But it is the truth, and I'm sure the original copy will show the differing handwriting, if anything. Remember Sussmayr was his pupil

Minor means the chords create a sad feel (as opposed to the brighter major keys) C minor...D minor is a bit higher in pitch...then E minor etc...The keys are generally pitched to suit various instruments or the range of the human voices within the context of a particular piece or just to create contrast between the various sections (movements) of the work.

I don't like Mozart for the most part(there are many people who I know that don't even listen to his music, and they just repeat what they've been told "Mozart's the BEST!"), but I will say, some of his more somber pieces(like this one) are great. His work has always been more Hit and Miss than "always great", but this is one of those "Hits"

@getsbent Mozart was not deaf (he could have been there is just no written recored ) but he did write this when he was very sick and going through financial criss so its still impressive that he was able to write anything

@Ninjababy37 'A lacrimosa', as you put it, is just one part of the latin Mass for the Dead, the words set by many composers as a 'Requiem'. I believe it translates as 'Ah, what weeping' - lacrima = tears.

your right, the best part is the chorus like opera. its my favourite. could mozart have died by poison? he did show signs of depression, the more music he made grew darker, more accurate, more complex... more aggressive near its end. give me your opinion. you gotta admit, would they have been able to tell if he was poisoned or not?

mozart he was the best > I thought he wrote twinkle tw little star when he was 4 or did a composition I dont know ! BUt Can yu imagine been totally deaf and what HE still wrote IS Mindblowing ! WHy cant people appreciate things for what they are !!!!
