The string quartet is the form in which Shostakovich's genius has manifested itself with the greatest strength and depth. As admirable as the ensemble is, it is in four of them that the composer's creativity reached its peak: the 8th Quartet, a pivotal work, a secular requiem that illuminates no hope, the austere and brutal 10th on the 12th, enriched by a search for atonality, and the 15th, a terrible funeral song that resounds like an echo of Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ. The interpretation of the Soviet musicians is admirable for its harshness, its architectural mastery and its power of evocation. Intensely dramatic, often very oppressive, the Borodin Quartet offers a deeply moving testimony, engraved for life in the marble of reference recordings.
-
Sviatoslav Richter and the Borodin Quartet have produced a version of the Quintet that is not close to being equalled. The absence of colour and the severity of the tone create the atmosphere of greyness in which Shostakovich's works are bathed. But above all, Soviet artists pulverize the neo-classical language of this Quintet. They translate the dramatic intensity with masterful nobility.

Here I am, in Saint Cloud, Florida, sending some letters to friends, making an effort to cheer each other, amidst this horrendous virus that literally, can decimate the most powerful armies in the world and paralyze life.
Good music , like these masterpieces by Dmitri Shostakovich, makes possible for me to work and, enhance the output of whatever thing that may be doing, it accompanies and does not bother my mental activity.
Have you ever thought how annoying and distracting bad music is? it becomes impossible to concentrate or do anything.
Thanks to those who make this wonderful website possible.

Thank you very much!!

Stijn Zimny

What about the first cycle (original members and recorded by american standards in the days on 35 mm filmreel) ? Why the second if i may ask ? Haven't heard this cycle by the way.

Classical Music/ /Reference Recording

@Stijn Zimny have you read our commentary?

Stijn Zimny

@Classical Music/ /Reference Recording Could you be a little more specific about what to find in the commentary that made the second cycle superieur to the first ? I would like to compair both to each other. Listening to the fourth stringquartet now from the first cycle and i think it is fantastic. It brought Dimitri Shostakovich to tears in the audience. My intuition says that probably both cycles are memborable. The first cycle isn't complete but does sound very deep also or more deep from what i heard !

Classical Music/ /Reference Recording

@Stijn Zimny The Borodin Quartet knew the composer and worked closely with him during his performances and recordings of his string quartets (the version presented here). You have given the answer yourself, this is the first complete cycle and it is the reference in terms of complete cycle. Everything is a success, there is no 'opus' weaker than another.

This set brilliantly portrays the genius of these 15 Quartets better than any other. Technically and artistically powerful, moving performances. The Borodin tone is simply gorgeous: warm and spine-tingling at once, perfectly suited to Shostakovich, The Borodin certainly capture in a profound way the emotive dramatic core, the essence, colour, gesture, tone and philosophic depth reflecting the weight of this century. Greatest recording of all time.

De vraies merveilles ! Un éblouissement devant la sensibilité de ces interprètes : ils donnent l'impression d'avoir si bien compris la mélancolie et les chagrins du géjnial Dimitri...
