Part II
И. С. Бах — Страсти по Матфею Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I just wanna, I just wanna
I just wanna go back now

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

The seasons may come and your luck may just run out
And all that you'll have is a memory, oh

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Used to get real high
Now I'm just gettin' a buzz

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of И. С. Бах — Страсти по Матфею's song Part II can be interpreted in a variety of ways, but one possible interpretation is that it speaks to the fleeting nature of life and regret over missed opportunities. The repeated refrain of "I just wanna go back now" suggests a longing to return to a time when things were simpler and easier, perhaps before the singer made mistakes or missed chances. The reference to seasons changing and luck running out implies that time is slipping away and that the singer feels powerless to stop it. The line "all that you'll have is a memory" reinforces this idea that life is fleeting and that what we do with our time matters.

The second stanza introduces a contrast between past and present, with the singer reflecting on how their experience of getting high has changed over time. The repetition of "used to get real high / now I'm just gettin' a buzz" suggests a sense of nostalgia for a time when the singer was able to experience things more intensely, even if those experiences were not always positive. This contrast may be meant to highlight the singer's sense of loss and regret, as they look back on their life and realize that they can never truly return to the past.

Er hat uns allen wohlgetan,
He has done good to all of us come
Den Blinden gab er das Gesicht,
To the blind he gave sight
Die Lahmen macht er gehend,
The lame he made able to walk
Er sagt uns seines Vaters Wort,
He told to us his father's word
Er trieb die Teufel fort,
He drove out the devils,
Betrübte hat er aufgericht',
He raised up those who are distressed,
Er nahm die Sünder auf und an.
He received and accepted sinners
Sonst hat mein Jesus nichts getan.
Nothing else has my Jesus done.

Aus Liebe,
Out of love,
Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben,
Out of love my saviour is willing to die,
Von einer Sünde weiß er nichts.
- Of any sin he knows nothing -
Dass das ewige Verderben
So that eternal ruin
Und die Strafe des Gerichts
And the punishment of judgement
Nicht auf meiner Seele bliebe.
May not remain upon my soul.

Indeed, this is a superb interpretation. At one stage, one feels, as if Helen Donath is about to burst into tears any moment soon. I suppose it was very difficult to keep the balance between emotions and rationality and technique. This is why I consider this interpretation one of the best ever in this register.

Does someone know the name of the soprano?

@JeremiahAlphonsus
