Sous le Ciel de Paris
Йdith Piaf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
S'envole une chanson
Hum hum
Elle est née d'aujourd'hui
Dans le cœur d'un garçon
Sous le ciel de Paris
Marchent des amoureux
Hum hum
Sur un air fait pour eux
Sous le pont de Bercy
Un philosophe assis
Deux musiciens quelques badauds
Puis les gens par milliers
Sous le ciel de Paris
Jusqu'au soir vont chanter
Hum hum
L'hymne d'un peuple épris
De sa vieille cité
Près de Notre Dame
Parfois couve un drame
Oui mais à Paname
Tout peut s'arranger
Quelques rayons
Du ciel d'été
L'accordéon
D'un marinier
L'espoir fleurit
Au ciel de Paris
Sous le ciel de Paris
Coule un fleuve joyeux
Hum hum
Il endort dans la nuit
Les clochards et les gueux
Sous le ciel de Paris
Les oiseaux du Bon Dieu
Hum hum
Viennent du monde entier
Pour bavarder entre eux
Et le ciel de Paris
A son secret pour lui
Depuis vingt siècles il est épris
De notre Ile Saint Louis
Quand elle lui sourit
Il met son habit bleu
Hum hum
Quand il pleut sur Paris
See'est qu'il est malheureux
Quand il est trop jaloux
De ses millions d'amants
Hum hum
Il fait gronder sur nous
Son tonnerre éclatant
Mais le ciel de Paris
N'est pas longtemps cruel
Hum hum
Pour se faire pardonner
Il offre un arc en ciel
The song "Sous Le Ciel De Paris" by Йdith Piaf is an enchanting love letter to the city of Paris. The singer describes the romance, happiness, tragedy, and hope that can be found in the city. The song's opening lines set the scene with the phrase, "Under the sky of Paris, a song takes flight." The lyrics go on to describe a new love that is blossoming in the city, as well as the music and street performers who entertain the crowds. The song also alludes to the Notre Dame cathedral, where sometimes tragedy can strike, but in Paris, everything can be fixed.
The song showcases the interplay between the city's inhabitants and Parisian life, including the famous River Seine, which flows through the city. The song paints a picture of a bustling city, with people from around the world coming together to bask in the beauty and joy of Paris. The song's hopeful message is encapsulated in the final stanza, where the sky of Paris is described as not cruel for too long and often brings an apology in the form of a rainbow.

It's a love song to Paris. English translation:
Beneath the Parisian sky
A song flutters away,
It was born today
In a young man's heart
Beneath the Parisian sky
Lovers walk about,
Their happiness built
Upon a tune made just for them
Beneath the Pont de Bercy
There's a seated philosopher
Two musicians and a few onlookers
And then people in the thousands
Beneath the Parisian sky
Will sing into the evening
The hymn of the people in love
With their old city
Near Notre Dame
Perhaps trouble's brewing
But in "Paname" everything gets worked out
A few rays
From the summer sky
The accordion
Of a sailor
Hope is blossoming
In the Parisian sky
Beneath the Parisian sky
A joyous river flows
That lulls the tramps
And beggars to sleep
Beneath the Parisian sky
God's birds
Come from around the world
To chat among themselves
The Parisian sky
Has its own secret
For twenty centuries it has been in love
With our Île Saint-Louis
When she smiles at him
He puts on his blue suit
When it rains over Paris
It's because he's sad
When he is jealous
Of her millions of lovers
He unleashes upon us
His roaring thunder
But the Parisian sky
Is not cruel for long
So that he may be forgiven
He offers a rainbow

Under the Paris Sky (Sous le ciel de Paris - English Transposition)
Under the Paris sky
Away does a song fly Hum, hum
It was born from today
In the heart of a guy
Under the Paris sky
Lovers quietly turn Hum, hum
Do their joys magnify
On this air made for them
The Bercy Bridge under
which sits a philosopher
Two musicians, some onlookers
Then people by clouds
Under the Paris sky
Hymn of a loving people hum, hum
Will be sung until night
For its city so old
Near Notre Dame
Sometimes there's drama.
Yes, but in Panam (1)
All works out like a charm
Just some shy rays
From summer sky
A sailor guy's
Accordion
The hope displays
Under the Paris sky
Under The Paris sky
Flows a joyful river
That makes sleep at night
All tramps and wanderers
Under the Paris sky
The good Lord's little birds
Are landing from worldwide
To chat with each other
And the sky of Paris
Has his (2) secret for him
For centuries his love has been
For our Île Saint Louis
When she smiles at him
Puts on him a coat of blue
But when it rains in Paris
That means he has the blues
When he is too jealous
Of her million lovers hum, hum
He does rumble on us
His dazzling thunder
But the sky of Paris
Is not for long cruel hum, hum
To be well forgiven
Offers rainbow in rule
1. "Panam" or "Paname" is the nickname given by Parisians to their city
2. I have deliberately used the personal pronouns "he" and "she" to speak of "the sky of Paris" and "L'île Saint Louis" because, in the song, they appear as full characters of the story that tells us this song, and not quite like simple places that one would name just to be geographically located. The song lends them feelings, as if they were real humans, much like how Walt Disney's animals were treated in his animated films.

:) You're welcome
@Pomplamoose
Playing these songs with these people makes me want to drop everything and move to France and just do this forever. The good news is that Pomplamoose is playing our first live show in five years tomorrow! And it’s SOLD OUT!!! Very excited to see our LA fans. We’ll be driving up to SF the next day! Still a few tickets left for that one so if you want to come see us on Saturday...pomplamoose.com A bientôt j’espère… :)
@FlorianFauvarque
Do you plan one day to do a live show in France? I would love to see you live but LA or SF is a little too far for a french guy like me. ;)
@David_Thompson
Hope your live gigs go really well! : )
@PatrickOchoa8a

@EmmaSancataldo960
Would you ever come to Sydney Australia?
@StudyCom
