The group was formed in 1983 by Armen Grigoryan (Армен Григорян) and Viktor Troyegubov (Виктор Троегубов) and quickly grew in popularity {[fact}} in the rock circles of Moscow. After the release of Illusionary World (Иллюзорный мир) in 1985, the group gained a reputation throughout the former Soviet Union and began to perform at concerts all over the country. However, Troyegubov left as a result of discord between the two leaders and formed a new project called Smoke (Дым). Krematorij continued to increase in popularity [citation needed] until several group members left again after the release of Coma (Кома) in 1988. Grigoryan succeeded in drawing new musicians to the band. The line-up has otherwise been unchanged to this day.
Troyegubov temporarily returned to the group in 1993 as both a musician and the director of the group. In 1994, the group worked on the film Tatsu (Тацу); however, the film was not a success and was never brought to rental, though clips from the film are frequently used in Krematorij’s music videos. After another quarrel, Troyegubov left the group for a second and final time. He later wrote a book entitled Life in Krematorij and Outside It (Жизнь в „Крематории“ и вне его) in which he makes many accusations against Grigoryan. He returned to Smoke which quickly dissipated.
Meanwhile, Krematorij continued its creative life, releasing several more albums and performing on tours all over the world [citation needed]. Krematorij contributed greatly to the development of the Russian rock music genre. Grigoryan composes multifaceted lyrics that frequently deal with the themes of life and death in various religious contexts. The use of the violin serves to give Krematorij an individuality that has been essential to the group’s continued popularity

The lyrics of "Павлик Морозов" by Крематорий describe a society that has lost its way and is trapped in a dead end. The song begins by referencing how people used to read important books but have now stopped reading altogether. They are stuck, trying to find a way out but continuously hitting a dead end. The one who walks ahead is worn down to dust, representing the exhaustion and disillusionment of those trying to lead.
The second verse addresses the plight of many individuals with worn-out faces and the presence of HIV/AIDS in their blood. Despite their struggles, each person tries to jump higher than their own head, striving for success. However, they forget that they are transient and merely clients of a psychiatric hospital. They do not recognize the futility of their pursuit and the reality of their path, which leads to an elusive, whispering house.
The chorus highlights the influence of Pavlik Morozov, a controversial figure in Soviet history who was portrayed as a hero and martyr for denouncing his father. He became a symbol of communist loyalty and was widely celebrated in propaganda. The repetition of "Pavlik Morozov is alive" emphasizes the lingering influence and impact of this figure. Despite his demise, his legacy continues to affect society, perhaps suggesting that people are still living within the constructs of outdated ideology.
The third verse delves into the story of Pavlik Morozov's birth, where multiple brave men impregnated his mother, resulting in the birth of a disappointed and vengeful individual. He despises his mother more than anyone and yet, she remains indifferent to how money is made. This illustrates the disconnect between the disillusioned youth and their parents, who may be trapped in their own desperation.
The final verse explores a society where everything is up for sale or rent, where a janitor can become a prince and a murderer can become a judge. The repetition of "All new poems are ripped from the old, new priests blame everything on the dead" portrays a cycle of recycling ideas and blaming the deceased for society's failures. The song concludes with the reaffirmation of Pavlik Morozov's existence, expressing that he is more alive than all the living.
Overall, "Павлик Морозов" by Крематорий critiques societal stagnation, disillusionment, and the endurance of outdated ideologies. It reflects on the influence of a controversial historical figure and the disconnect between the younger generation and their elders.
