Although not a member of the group of Russian composers usually known in English-speaking countries as 'The Five', his music has come to be known and loved for its distinctly Russian character as well as for its rich harmonies and stirring melodies. His works, however, were much more western than those of his Russian contemporaries, as he effectively used international elements in addition to national folk melodies.

It's hard to understand because the English translation, while very poetic, loses most of the point of the original.
The text is an allegory of Jesus's life, reflecting the mainstream Christian belief that Jesus, while rejected during his lifetime, redeemed humanity by his sacrifice in dying on the cross.
VERSE 1: The text starts from the premise that Jesus is born to be a King. He grows the roses in order to make a crown that will represent his kingship. In the original, the implication is that he intends to combine all the roses into one single crown, while the English translation suggests multiple "garlands".
VERSE 2: The original states that the roses are "fully grown", symbolizing that Jesus is ready to become king, though the translation is less explicit about this. The children (explicitly described as Jewish in the original) represent the people of Jesus's kingdom. But, instead of accepting Jesus as their king, the children pluck the roses, symbolically rejecting him and depriving him of his kingship.
VERSE 3: This is the verse in which the translation is most problematic. In the original, the children ridicule Jesus because he no longer has any roses with which to make his crown; he replies that, though they have taken the petals, he still has the thorns. In the English version, they appear to be ridiculing him for putting roses in his hair (perhaps because it is effeminate?); he replies by telling them to take the petals away, but to leave the thorns.
VERSE 4: In response, the children "crown" Jesus with the thorns remaining from the original roses, in what is clearly intended to be a reference to Jesus' crucifixion. (The Gospels describe Jesus as being crowned with a literal "crown of thorns" while on the cross).

I Love this song it really causes a powerful spiritual sensation as if I can feel the pain Jesus felt and the beauty of his great goodness and love. The song makes me want to cry to think of the pain he endured. He came to this world with a message of Love and forgiveness and healing and the world tortured him on a cross. Yes with his stripes we are healed.
