I also don’t understand: WHY THE CITY HALL DOES NOT TAKE MEASURES TO CONVERT SUCH BUILDINGS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE: after all, it would be possible to open a home for the elderly there; various schools, shops, restaurants, hotels, museums....
- But unfortunately, due to the unreasonableness of the mayor's office... such buildings simply disappear in all the winds, snow and rain.
- Probably everything again and again - depends on the entire population... who received such an abandoned heritage.
- After all, the property could be sold to the population... rather than being given over to be torn to pieces by merciless nature.

Many years ago, here in the UK, there was a manor house that was sold off, subdivided by a developer that did some remedial work and central services put in and then subdivided into apartment sections which were sold seperately. Each purchaser was then responsible for restoring their apartment. It was an amazing project with a lot of very, very hard work over years, but the result saved the building and created beautiful homes.

Fun fact: the "Roman man" at 51:00 is actually a statue of Diana, goddess of the hunt 😉it's possible that at one time this property may have been merely the family's "hunting lodge" with their primary residence in Paris or elsewhere. Love seeing inside these places, thank you!

To expensive to restore after they have been abandoned by the owners for so long. I imagine that the roof in the older side of the castle is rotted through. It also may have a major termite problem besides the black mold. The family really should remove the antiques from the building and possibly display them in an art gallery. There is so much history in these old castles. It is such a waste to let them go this way.

Where I live they have taken old home and restored them to turn them into musuems, of bed and breakfast. I have seen others turned into apartments. This place is georgous, and a historical site. It really needs to be saved using taxes and volunteers for future generations to relive history. They could make the money up by making this a tourist attraction.

@@aleafox1675 The house is absolutely beautiful. I think the biggest problem would be an initial investment in it. By the looks of some of the ceilings, there has been roofing problems. We really didn't see it very closely, I imagine that there are termites and wood rot throughout the structure. Those spiders are another problem, once they get a foothold they are not easy to get rid of. The video didn't show the foundation of the building or the roof, so if they are not salvageable, then it wouldn't be safe to have people live in it. All of this is actually predicated on whether the family that owns it is willing to do a transfer of ownership to the government to let them restore it. Governments usually do not get involved in private property ownership. Most homes or castles such as this one, are refurbished and maintained by the family who owns it. This one in not abandoned, it is sitting empty but it is still a part of an estate. It has a lot of personal effects still in the home, such as clothing, pictures, and other personal items.

It still blows my mind that families leave so many things behind. I understand that managing a Chateau is very costly, it does appear that the family could not afford the upkeep even when they were living there too much decay for being abandoned in 2008, but why they don't sell off the furniture or donate it with the clothing, then take family photos and other personal items before leaving. and at least try to sell the Chateau before it gets to the point that it can't be restored. Great video Lesley, PLEASE wear a mask, that black mold might cause harm later in life, you breath in way too much of it, also a lot of those old Chateaus have asbestos as well. It might be a case of heirs fighting over the estate? These issues take years to resolve. And sometimes it is restricted to sell or divide these huge estates through inheritance prohibition’s from ancient days. This is sometimes what does them in sadly.

I believe many times people were ran out of their homes due to wars, we're maybe killed, or taken hostage, so things get left behind. Just what my intuition says... I know it says he was in a car accident, so then his like (many families) could have been victims of violence or driven out... Who knows though.

French inheritance laws and tax make it almost impossible for a chateau to stay in the family: firstly the estate is split between by the inheritors (4 sisters for this chateau) and then each pays 45% tax on the rest (after a €100k allowance). In this case the chattels were sold off by auction for around €90k in 2014, and most recently the chateau was sold by judicial auction for €201k - about the value of the forest and farmland.

I love the reverence that he shows these homes. He speaks in hushed tones. It feels appropriate somehow. There's something ghostly about these houses because you can so clearly see the imprints people left in these homes through their furniture, the arrangement of their rooms, the photographs left behind. They are not just buildings, they feel like monuments to people who have long since passed. I wonder if someday another person will discover my personality by inspecting my remnants.

Furthermore, you can see the pain that this person lived in in the final years of their life. My dad makes stacks like this. He's a troubled person. There is so much of the save-save-save mentality to him - which is not wrong, sometimes - but you can see what it left behind, and how much it was appreciated by the people who lived past him, whether those were friends or descendants or merely beneficiaries.

If I'm not mistaken, the room you said was for food storage may originally have been a still/apothecary room where herbs were dried and remedies were compounded and put together. They were usually located near the kitchens on the lowest floor where it tended to stay darker and cool. Amazing place!

No abandoned place is more beatiful and more interesting to explore than an abandoned castle! This castle is just gorgeous, all its rooms displaying so many priceless artifacts and exquisite works of art ! So sad to realize its beauty and value may never be restored! Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. For the castle to have only been abandoned for 8 years, there's FAR too much decay for it to have been recent. Even taking to account that it's literally sitting on water. The place was very likely falling into ruin while still occupied, with the last owners likely unable to fully keep up with the expense of maintaining the grounds.

It's a shame that you weren't able to get any footage of the grounds, that bell tower(?) to the front of the castle, and that building to the side that looked like stables. That would have been interesting to see.

This is the most romantic castle I have ever seen. There were a lot of books, but why wasn't there a library? I find this odd. I would think that during this time period there would be a very large one. I was amazed at how the paint in the living areas was in fairly good shape. I'd like to know what brand they used. I wish Disney would or someone like Downton Abbey would purchase this, and restore it to it's grandsor. Simply 🌹 romance.

I like the clip you left in of the “re-entry”:of the business office. Hello from western Canada. Can you explain to us why a whole family would abandon everything?? Can you explain why no one comes to the rescue of these priceless treasures? There must be members of the family thrilled to have the China or paintings?? Can no one save anything?? Is it junk to the French people? Such waste makes me very sad. If I could come from my humble farm in Canada to help save these treasures I would.

It's pretty wonderful that this castle has so many antiques decorating its walls. I really like the recessed paintings, plates and tea sets. The wooden trim along with the tall windows and grand doors transports us to another era in time.

This castle was built before the French Revolution -- so many changes since that time. One wonders if the family was able to escape. Although the moat is beautiful, it is probably the cause of much of the deterioration and black mold. Thank you for the thorough tour -- you both do an excellent job.

Yes - it is surprising that the portraits are sold off - it they were mine I would treasure them. I live close by to this chateau and there are lots of local auctions where family portraits and old photo albums are sold of: they get good prices: people like the portraits - especially in Paris apartments - and the albums are split up - old photos (pre 1900) get €40 each on ebay, and an album might have 200 photos in it...

Lesley, I decided to look up castles in France before I saw this video. I read that there are hundreds of vacant castles are found all over the country. I guess the younger generations want to live more in the cities and live a life where they can travel the world. They don't want them anymore and they're too expensive to fix because they have to be upgraded to the latest technologies. Anyway, I saw your video of the churches in Detroit. I think that your admiration of the buildings that you explore comes across in your voice. It makes it so enjoyable to sit back and look at everything through your eyes. These stories are so sad when someone dies and all that was them, their homes, clothing and personal items sit there waiting for their owner to return. The castle is gorgeous but it is a shame that it's falling to ruin. I just wanted to add that the first section you expored was the servants work and living area ( break rooms and a small kitchen for their own use). When the main kitchen was in the basement the room you couldn't figure out where animals were kept was the butchers room, they would cut up the meat once the animals wee slaughtered at another location, most likely outside in a barn somewhere on the grounds. There was also a small space at the bottom of the spiral staircase that had a latch to keep it closed I think you overlooked. The floors about were where the staff lived and ate. The main part of the Castle was were the residents lived.

The painting in the sitting room with all the magazines was of King Louis XIV of France.

You really do need to be extra careful around that amount of black mold. If you get the spores in your nasal passages or inhale them into your lungs it could make you extremely ill and many people still lie from the mold that spreads to their lungs and brain so use caution when entering these places that are this decayed. At least wear of paper mask over your nose and mouth. I had a friend nearly die from black mold some years back. She. her son and father all were hospitalized and their house was condemned due to the black mold in their basement.

Yeah I saw that little door with the latch at the bottom of the staircase too. I was hoping he would try to open it. I agree about the black mold, he should at least wear a mask. I hope he doesn’t get ill. God bless him & keep him safe. That wooden wagon was so cool. Items like that from these castles should be put in some kind of a museum with the history & usage of them. Such wonderful & educational pieces of history from our past.

We have many here in the states that are old homes and mansions that have been restored and placed on the Historical Society registry. Many well over 100 years old and yet some people still live in them. I see so many beautiful old homes for sale and I would really love to own one of them.

IT cost so much to save these buildings that it cant be done. Its such a shame. Some of the antiques should be saved. These things can never be made today. These homes can never be built today. There every where in the world. Going to ruin. We are very lucky that Lesley and Danny are able to bring it to us to see. Not long and they will be gone for ever. We all know there were happy times and very sad times in these places. Things we will never know about the people that lived here. The childs tricycle was really nice. You could tell at one time that many of the rooms were lovely. Also just still seems sad. So much life there once. They should let an auctioneer hold things cleaned up and on the lawn in air conditioned tent with pastries and cold drinks. Before long, won't be able to, with the water and moisture that will destroy it. And not have sale inside with the mold. But I think people would come to the sale to even look at the outside of the castle. Just a thought. Thank you for really very nice tour and you are so friendly. 😊

You are so great at showing this with great respect. It looks as if a family member was an artist, due to painting standing up on shelves without frames and you can tell those are the same artist. With price tags on other framed works is another hint. Someone was selling the framed one's in one of the rooms. Oh my word, it's heart wrenching to see the castle deteriorating but all the furniture, artworks, light fixtures... it's just sickening it breaks my heart.

He died in 2013 and had 6 children. Based on all the decay, my bet would be that it is so expensive to maintain that it’s easier for them to walk away from it.

Lesley, this is just amazing, thank you so much for giving us a tour. Perhaps the owner’s estate was contested by relatives or estate taxes have caused a delay in settlement, I’m in America and this happens often if families own large properties with land. There are so many expensive treasures left in the mansion, the furniture, chandeliers or even a rare book could be worth thousands.

I found your channel about a month ago and have been binge watching. I love old castle's I'm from USA we have few castle's here & you can only see the outside. I love how you show details and explain everything you are really good at this thanks for entertaining. Seeing these places falling down is sad. I'd have a hard time with leaving all those antiques To be destroyed I'd have lots of storage buildings to restore these things . This is one of the nicer ones you shown. You'd be saving these antiques and people would buy them get more use out of them it would be a good business.

The beautiful dishes etc. the dressing rooms you thought were walk in closets were where the ladies and even the mens servants dressed the lords and ladies who lived there.
