Wicked Game
•HIM• Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The world was on fire, no-one could save me but you
It's strange what desire will make foolish people do
I'd never dreamed that I'd need somebody like you
And I'd never dreamed that I'd need somebody like you

No I don't want to fall in love
This world is always gonna brake your heart
No I don't want to fall in love
This world is always gonna brake your heart,
with you

What a wicked game to play
To make me feel this way
What a wicked thing to do
To let me dream of you
What a wicked thing to say
You never felt this way
What a wicked thing you do
To make me dream of you

No I don't want to fall in love
This world is always gonna brake your heart
No I don't want to fall in love
This world is always gonna brake your heart,
with you

The world was on fire, no-one could save me but you
It's strange what desire will make foolish people do
No and I never dreamed that I'd love somebody like you
I'll never dream that I lose somebody like you, no

Now I want to fall in love
This world is always gonna brake your heart
Now I want to fall in lust
This world is always gonna brake your heart,
with you

Nobody loves no-one

Overall Meaning

At its heart, Wicked Game is a song about desire and the dangerous game it can lead us to play. The opening lines set the scene for a world in chaos with a narrator who is alone and helpless, until they find love in the form of the subject of the song. They never expected to need someone, but now they do. However, this love is not all pure and simple, as the chorus reveals. The singer is conflicted - on one hand, they do not want to fall in love because it will inevitably bring pain, but on the other hand, they cannot help themselves. The subject of the song has the power to make them feel ways they never thought they would, and this is both exhilarating and terrifying.

The verses and chorus are both underpinned by the repeated refrain "what a wicked game to play". This line is loaded with meaning - it could refer to the cruel game that desire can play with our emotions, or to the manipulation and power play that can be involved in love affairs. Additionally, it could be interpreted as a comment on the wickedness of the world itself, which is always going to break our hearts. The song ends on a bleak note, with the final line "nobody loves no-one", which could be echoing the sense of loneliness and isolation conveyed in the opening lines.
