The Man Who Sold the World
░Nirvana░ Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long, long time ago

Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for form and land
For years and years, I roamed
I gazed a gazeless stare
We walked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long, long time ago

Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

"Thanks, that was a David Bowie song"
"What's next?"
"I didn't screw it up, did I?
Okay, but here's another one I could screw up"
"What is it?"
"Am I going to do this by myself?"
"Do it by yourself"
"Okay, well, I think I'll try it in a different key

I'll try it in the normal key
And if it sounds bad, these people are just gonna have to wait"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana are a contemplation on identity and perception. The song begins with the singer encountering an old friend who they thought had died a long time ago. The friend claims to have sold the world but the singer can't understand how that is possible. The encounter leaves the singer feeling disoriented and unsure about the nature of reality. The chorus repeats the idea that they never lost control and that the singer is now face to face with the man who sold the world, leaving a sense of ambiguity about what really happened.

The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways, but one interpretation is that they describe the feeling of being disconnected from one's sense of self and reality. The encounter with the friend who may or may not be dead, and who claims to have sold the world, creates a sense of confusion and loss of control. The repeated assertion that they never lost control may be a way of trying to affirm their own identity and hold onto some sense of certainty.

The closing dialogue between band members at the end of the song adds a layer of meta-awareness to the lyrics. The band members discuss the possibility of screwing up the next song, indicating that the performance itself is a form of identity construction that can be fraught with uncertainty and the possibility of failure.

@@NirvanaGuitars "Do you see someone truly skilled, and diligent, in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank." - Proverbs 22:29 (I emphasized it a little, but you get the idea.) *

If there's anyone else on all of Youtube who is nailing the Nirvana tone like you are, I haven't seen them.

Any time from 2007 - 2019, I never really saw anyone trying to do tonally accurate covers. These seem to be a lot more recent, but I also wasn't watching every song cover that popped up.

I've also seen Hardly Ramone and Southern Version being into tonal accuracy, but with Ramones covers.

There's another thing here - you know how some tabs say "do this" or "do that" but they're on the wrong frets compared to the version they're tabbing? Yeah, that. How subtle accuracy is not present in all covers uploaded to YT, and sometimes the errors are not so subtle. For example, tons of Ramones covers did down/up strumming when it's supposed to be all down strums and nothing else whatsoever.

* Another version of Proverb 22:29 is "Do you see a man who excels in their work? He will stand before kings, he will not stand before unknown men."
