Hey
● The Pixies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey
Been trying to meet you
Hey
Must be a devil between us
Or whores in my head
Whores at my door
Whores in my bed
But hey
Where have you been?
If you go, i will surely die
We're chained

'Uh' said the man to the lady
'Uh' said the lady to the man she adored
And the whores like a choir
Go 'uh' all night
And mary ain't you tired of this?
Uh
Is
The
Sound

That the mother makes when the baby breaks
We're chained

Overall Meaning

The Pixies's song Hey is a haunting ballad about lost love and the torment that comes with it. The lyrics suggest that there is something dividing the singer and the person they are speaking to - "Must be a devil between us" - but it is unclear what exactly that is. The repeating refrain of "hey" seems to be a plea for the person to finally show up and end the torture. The line, "If you go, I will surely die" emphasizes the singer's reliance on this person to fill a void in their life, while "we're chained" describes the helplessness of the situation.

The second half of the song introduces a dialogue between a man and a woman, who seem to be engaged in a meaningless conversation. The whores in the background go "uh" like a choir, adding to the sense of despair and confusion. The line "And Mary ain't you tired of this?" suggests that even the prostitutes are losing patience with the situation. Finally, the song ends with the sound of a baby crying, which could symbolize the birth of a new hope or the death of something precious.

i have so many feelings about this song.

years ago, i was in a psych ward for attempted suicide. I met a woman there who was also there for the same thing. we bonded over the same feelings we felt.

before i left, she gave me a letter. it was pretty letter with rainbow lines on it. i still have it. we hugged and cried and said goodbye. after we both got out, we kept in touch. she introduced me to this song, and i'll always associate it with her.

meagan, i'll never forget you. thank you for being a friend to me during a difficult time in my life. i hope you're doing well now.
