In “Wish You Were Here,” Avril Lavigne sings about missing a loved one who has gone away. She first speaks about her tough personality, but with this person, it's different. Avril used to build a wall around herself, but the person she misses most has managed to peep into her life and made her vulnerable to their absence. In the second stanza, she reminisces about all the crazy things the pair did together but did not put much thought into them, they just went with the flow. She is now left alone, always thinking about their memories, but now they’re not there beside her, and she wishes they were there.
In the chorus, Avril repeats how she wishes this person was there with her. She emphasizes how much she wants them here, and she cannot handle their absence. Lavigne makes it abundantly clear that letting go is not an option. She concludes the song by saying she wishes the person would always be with her and that she never wants to let go.
