Clocks
☆ Coldplay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead, singing

Come out of the things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head and then a
Trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing

You are, you are

Confusion that never stops
The closing walls and the ticking clocks gonna
Come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know, singing

Come out upon my seas
Cursed missed opportunities am I
A part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease, singing

You are, you are
You are, you are
You are, you are

And nothing else compares
Oh no nothing else compares
And nothing else compares

You are, you are

Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go

Home, home, where I wanted to go (you are)
Home, home, where I wanted to go (you are)

Overall Meaning

"Clocks" is a song by British rock band Coldplay from their second studio album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head". The song was released as the album's lead single on August 27, 2002, and became one of their most successful tracks, winning numerous awards and being included in many "greatest songs of all time" lists.

The song starts with the lights going out, representing a sudden change in the environment. The line “Tides that I tried to swim against” signifies trying to fight against the forces of nature or forces that the singer couldn't control. The phrase “Come out of the things unsaid” is a metaphor for trying to escape inner thoughts and feelings that have been suppressed. The line “Shoot an apple off my head” could refer to the story of William Tell, where an archer had to shoot an apple off his son's head to save their lives. This could symbolize a situation where one's life is on the line and every move has to be carefully calculated. “A trouble that can't be named” could refer to a difficulty that is hard to explain or define, and “a tiger waiting to be tamed” could represent a challenge waiting to be overcome.

The chorus of the song ("You are, you are, you are...") is a repetition of a phrase. At first, it's hard to understand its meaning. But as the song continues, the phrase becomes more significant. The chorus could be interpreted as a reminder that the singer's purpose or identity is important and needs to be acknowledged. The line “Confusion that never stops” suggests an internal struggle or a state of mind that is always clouded. The “closing walls” and “ticking clocks” could represent the pressure of time or the passage of time, and the idea of being trapped in a situation that gets progressively worse. The repeated line “Come back and take you home” could be interpreted as a call to return to a place of comfort and familiarity.

This song is for my mom who past away of cancer in 2010. Her eyes were big and green. She was a single parent that raised four kids on her own. I wish I had the strength and stamina to be such a wonderful lady that never needed any man, she always thought of us ids first. Miss you mom.<3

Heard this for the first time today, walking down the sidewalk in a seaside town. Two guys were playing it live at an outdoor cafe. Stopped me in my tracks. Electric bass and acoustic guitar expertly matched--filling the quiet afternoon air, casting a spell on all who passed.

Green eyes... The only eye color that can change colors too.
