The lyrics of Nirvana's "In Bloom" deal with the issue of commercialization of alternative music. The opening lines of the song, "Sell the kids for food / Weather changes moods / Spring is here again / Reproductive glands," are a call-out to the media’s over-emphasis on doom-and-gloom attitude that permeates the commercialized music industry. Kurt Cobain had long been critical of the mainstream music industry’s commercialization of alternative music and how they use it to sell records. The next line, "He's the one / Who likes all our pretty songs / And he likes to sing along / And he likes to shoot his gun / But he don't know what it means," is a sarcastic jab at the music industry executives who try to use the band’s music to sell records, but completely miss its meaning.

The lyrics then segue into the refrain, “And I say, yeah," Cobain singing it in a sneering tone that suggests that he does not buy into this attitude. In the following stanza, the lyrics mention the “nature is a whore” line, which refers to the pressure on bands to keep making hits, that they are being pimped out for the record companies. The line, “Bruises on the fruit / Tender age in bloom,” implies that the pressure of mass-production has made the fruit become not as sweet as it once was. Finally, the song repeats the ironic chorus, which seems to suggest that people who don't understand the song's meaning will still enjoy it all the same.
