Said the night wind to the little lamb,
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
Do you know what I know
In your palace wall, mighty king,
Do you know what I know
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere,
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
Listen to what I say
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night

He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

Overall Meaning

The song "Do You Hear What I Hear" was written in 1962 by Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne. The lyrics, as interpreted briefly, describe a conversation between different characters - the wind, the lamb, the shepherd boy, the king and the people - about a star, a song, and a child. Each part of the conversation builds on the previous one to highlight the message of hope and peace that the birth of the child brings. The song's poetic language and call for peace have made it a popular Christmas carol for almost six decades.

Looking deeper into the song, one can see the use of recurrent imagery that adds depth to the story. For example, the star with a tail as big as a kite is an allusion to the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Wise Men to the Nativity scene. The lamb and the shepherd boy conjure up the image of the humble setting for Jesus' birthplace while the king's questioning mirrors that of King Herod, who sought to kill the baby Jesus. The final verse, which calls for peace, echoes a unifying message that resonates with all cultures.

My daughter's father just passed away and she is only 20 years old. We laid him to rest yesterday but Christmas will not be the same without him. Though we are not married any longer the pain is deep. Listening to this song helps get me through. My daughter Shannon it will take much longer.
