♪ Depeche Mode Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like the girl who acted on the TV
Always knowing when to say
Wishing for a moment so that they could see
Staring in the night
A picture in my room
And I think that she knew her lines
Break away tonight
I wanna hold your hand
We've got to get it right
We've got to understand
Carefully watching waiting as I
Stood upon the back streets and we start to play
I was screaming louder as the
Curtains fall between us in a twisted way
Staring in the night
A picture in my room
And I think that she knew her lines
Break away tonight
I wanna hold your hand
We've got to get it right
We've got to understand
Placing all the questions in the
Minutes of a game we won so long ago
Dangerous and beautiful the
Radio transmission that I have to know
You could never run
You could never stay
And I think you belong to me
Break away tonight
I wanna hold your hand
We've got to get it right
We've got to understand
The first verse of "Shout" by Depeche Mode talks about trying to be someone else, specifically someone seen on TV. The singer mentions a girl who always knows what to say but perhaps doesn't get enough recognition or understanding. It's almost as if the girl wants to be seen for who she really is and is waiting for a moment to show her true self. In the second verse, the singer describes a picture in their room of the girl they mentioned before. It almost seems like the picture is a symbol of the girl's desire to break free and be herself, and the singer wishes to accompany her on this journey towards authenticity.
The next verse describes the singer and the girl meeting up in the backstreets and engaging in a "twisted" game, perhaps one where they both pretend to be something they're not. The second half of the verse mentions a radio transmission that the singer is eager to hear, possibly indicating that they want to be part of something bigger or more exciting than their current situation. The song concludes with the singer trying to convince the girl to break away with him and find their own path towards understanding and self-discovery.

Fun fact this guy was a HUGE in Japan (made Michael Jackson change his tour dates bc his concerts were so packed an extra night was added) he also inspired the wardrobe of many rock japanese bands.
