Heart Shaped Box
♪ Nirvana Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnetar pit trap trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice, your advice
Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel hair and baby's breath
Broken hymen of your Highness, I'm left back
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice, your advice
She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnetar pit trap trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey!
Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice, your advice, your advice, your advice
The song "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana was written by lead singer Kurt Cobain and released in 1993. The lyrics of the song appear to be about a relationship that is based on power dynamics and control. The first verse references the woman in the relationship eyeing the singer like a Pisces, which is a metaphor for being vulnerable and weak. The singer feels like he has been locked in the woman's "heart-shaped box" for weeks, which could be interpreted as being trapped in the relationship. He compares the woman to a magnetar, which is a type of star that emits strong magnetic fields, suggesting she has power over him. He then expresses a desire to "eat [her] cancer" when she turns black, which could be interpreted as either a desire to save her or a desire to hurt her.
The chorus repeats the lines "Hey! Wait! I've got a new complaint / Forever in debt to your priceless advice," suggesting that the singer is unhappy in the relationship but still feels obligated to listen to the woman's advice. The second verse continues with the theme of power dynamics, with the singer mentioning "meat-eating orchids" which "forgive no one just yet," perhaps hinting at the idea that the woman is vindictive and unforgiving. He then references cutting himself on angel hair and baby's breath, which could be interpreted as self-harm. The final line of the verse references the "broken hymen of your highness," which could be interpreted as a destructive or unhealthy sexual relationship.
Overall, the lyrics of "Heart Shaped Box" suggest a complicated and destructive relationship that is based on power dynamics and control. While the specifics of the relationship are left open to interpretation, the song paints a dark and haunting picture of the singer's experiences.

If they WERE around in the 1960s then they would of been as big as the Beatles.
if not then bigger
@garethjones3227
Don't agree on that one dude, i think they would have been to avant garde for that early on in music history. The worlds ears just wasn't ready back then. Just take the pixies as an example, they were way ahead of thier time and would have been better recieved between 95-05' imho.
It's the whole back to the future johnny b goode scenario.
