Paper Cuts
♪ Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I'm feeling tired
She pushed food through the door
And I crawl towards the crack of light
Sometimes I can't find my way
Newspapers spread around
Soaking all that they can
A cleaning is due again
A good hosing down

The lady whom I feel maternal love for
Cannot look me in the eyes
But I see hers and they are blue
And they cock and twist and masturbate

I said so
I said so
I said so
Nirvana, nirvana, nirvana, nirvana

Black windows of paint
I scratched with my nails
I see others just like me
Why do they not try to escape?
They bring out the older ones
They point in my way
They come with a flash of light
And take my family away

And very later I have learned to
Accept some friends of ridicule
My whole existence is for your amusement
And that is why I'm here with you!
To take you with me
You're right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's "Paper Cuts" capture the bleak desperation of a person trapped in an oppressive environment, possibly a mental institution or a jail. The first verse describes the singer's exhaustion and hunger, which are alleviated by someone pushing food towards them through a door. However, their attempts at finding a way out are thwarted by the newspapers spread around them, soaking up any hope of escape. The singer longs for a good cleaning, for a chance to start anew, but it never comes.

The second verse introduces the theme of maternal love and sexual desire. The singer longs for the affection of a woman but feels shame and rejection because she cannot bring herself to look him in the eye. Instead, he is left to gaze at her blue, masturbating eyes. The repeated phrases of "I said so" and "Nirvana" could be interpreted as an attempt to distract oneself from the overwhelming feelings of anxiety and helplessness.

The third verse portrays a world where everyone is trapped, scratching at the black windows of paint in desperation but never finding a way out. They are subject to the whims of the older ones and powerless to resist when their families are taken away in a flash of light. The final lines hint at the singer's awareness that his very existence is just for the amusement of others, and yet he still longs to be with them and take them on this journey.

Overall, "Paper Cuts" is a haunting depiction of psychological imprisonment and the suffocating effects of oppressive institutions. The lyrics convey a sense of futility and despair, as well as the desire for freedom and connection even in the darkest of situations.

It’s honestly kinda sad how Dave Grohl has been part of 2 bands, and two of his best friends died.

@JPproductions303

And it’s sadly poetic drummer losing his singer and a singer loosing his drummer

@philly_sports1558

Dave must have had flashbacks when he found out about Taylor. It must’ve been worse for him actually because he knew Taylor for about 25 years and only knew Kurt for about 5. I really feel for the guy.

@TheAndradeCS

I can't imagine how Pat Smear must feel, he was in 3 bands where his friends died, 2 of those being the same Dave Grohl was in. It's tragedy all around.
