Spaceman
♫The Killers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It started with a low light
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
And then they took my blood type
It left a strange impression in my head
You know that I was hoping
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind
But when they cut me open
I guess that changed my mind
And you know I might
Have just flown too far from the floor this time
'Cause they calling me by my name
And the zipping white light beams
Disregards the bombs and satellites

That was the turning point
That was one lonely night

The star maker says, it ain't so bad
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, everybody look down
It's all in your mind

Well now I'm back at home, and
I'm looking forward to this life I live
You know its gonna haunt me
So hesitation to this life I give
You think you might cross over
You're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea
You better look it over
Before you make that leap

And you know I'm fine
But I hear those voices at night sometimes
They justify my claim
And the public don't dwell my transmission
'Cause it wasn't televised

But, it was the turning point
Oh what a lonely night

The star maker says, it ain't so bad
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, everybody look down
It's all in your mind

The star maker says, it ain't so bad
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, everybody look down
It's all in your mind

My global position systems are vocally addressed
They say the Nile used to run from east to west
They say the Nile used to run, from east to west

And you know I'm fine
But I hear those voices at night
Sometimes

The star maker says, it ain't so bad
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, everybody look down
It's all in your mind

The star maker says, it ain't so bad
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, everybody look down
It's all in your mind

It's all in my mind
It's all in my mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Spaceman" describe an experience of being abducted by extraterrestrial beings, undergoing mysterious medical procedures, and then being returned to Earth. The first verse sets the stage with the unusual circumstances of being taken from bed and having one's blood type taken. The singer expresses a desire to escape the problems of our world, but the subsequent medical procedure changes his mind. In the chorus, the "star maker" seems to suggest that the encounter is not as bad as it seems, while the "dream maker" is perhaps a more sinister force that will cause madness. The "spaceman" urges everyone to look down and realize that everything is just in our minds.

The second verse introduces a new complication - the experience has left the singer haunted and hesitant about his current life. He warns others to carefully consider any decision to cross over to another realm, perhaps one beyond death. Despite his issues, he feels justified in his claims and wishes to spread a message that the public does not understand. The repeated chorus encourages the listener to question their perception of reality and to remember that their thoughts and fears are powerful.

The song's lyrics and music video were heavily influenced by singer Brandon Flowers' Mormon faith and his interest in science fiction. The "spaceman" character was inspired by the science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert A. Heinlein. The music video was directed by Ray Tintori and features Flowers in a spacesuit hallucinating in a desert and performing with the rest of the band in a strange futuristic setting. "Spaceman" was met with critical acclaim and reached number five in the UK Singles Chart. It is considered one of the band's most popular and enduring songs.

Lyrics:

A Dustland fairytale beginning
With just another white trash county kiss
In '61, long brown hair and foolish eyes
He looked just like you'd want him to
Some kind of slick chrome American prince
A blue jean serenade
Moon River what'd you do to me
I don't believe you

Saw Cinderella in a party dress but
She was looking for a night gown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He's getting ready for the showdown
I saw the minute that I turned away
I got my money on a pawn tonight

The change came in disguise of revelation, set his soul on fire
She said she'd always knew he'd come around
And the decades disappear like sinking ships, but we persevere
God gives us hope, but we still fear what we don't know
The mind is poison
Castles in the sky sit stranded vandalized
We're drawbridges closing

Saw Cinderella in a party dress
But she was looking for a nightgown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He's getting ready for the showdown
I saw the ending when they turned the page
I threw my money and I ran away
Straight to the valley of the great divide

Out where the dreams all hide
Out where the wind don't blow
Out here the good girls die
And the sky won't snow
Out here the bird don't sing
Out here the field don't grow
Out here the bell don't ring
Out here the bell don't ring
Out here the good girls die

Now Cinderella don't you go to sleep
It's such a bitter form of refuge
Why don't you know the kingdom's under siege
And everybody needs you
Is there still magic in the midnight sun
Or did you leave it back in sixty-one
In the cadence of a young man's eyes
Out where the dreams all hide
