There's a certain intensity to the song that I can't explain. The lyrics are subtle yet tell such a huge story. The production is very engrossing. It's almost as if listening to the song, you're experiencing yourself what she feels.

When the pulsating synth comes in on the hook I just can't. This is one of the most unsettling, morbid, and tragically beautiful whirlwinds of eclectic sound I have ever heard. The disturbing imagery. The way the strings contrast the quantized drums and synthesizers. The way Bjork erupts on the chorus. The breakdown when she repeats "safe again" is so full of warmth and longing you can almost feel the desire emanating from the song. It's like as the anticipation for this reunion with her lover builds so does the music. Perfection

I’ve always viewed this song as a confession of all of the ugly, angry, and destructive things we do that we would never let our loved ones see. In the first verse, we set up a scene where Bjork and her lover are pictured at a mountaintop where Bjork is throwing things off of a cliff, possibly eluding to self destructive and even self harming behavior. The chorus appears to be the core of this confession, or perhaps the things she longs to tell her lover but cannot. She wishes she could say that her world is breaking and they are the thing keeping her together and making her feel safe. The opening few lines of the second verse always send chills up my spine somehow. “It’s early morning...No one is awake.” It sounds like something we’re not supposed to hear as the listener. During the closing lines of the second verse, these confessions of self destruction turn to suicidal ideation in a seamless shift in metaphor. She wonders what would happen if she chose to end things instead of wasting them away bit by bit. When the beat kicks in more during the second chorus, I’ve always seen it as her lover waking up and Bjork going back to see them, feeling “safe again”, as those two lines repeat.

It's a really emotional experience to come back to a song or artist after years of not hearing it. Listening to this now I can understand how influential this was for me in high school. The melody of the electric piano over the bass line in the beginning. Somehow that was ingrained in the way I would forever write melodies. It's a pretty intense feeling to realize this after all of these years.

My interpretation of the lyrics...for some of us, we never know if we're going to find a soul mate. When we do, and it exceeds our wildest expectations, we're both in awe and afraid. Afraid that we're going to screw it up by not being perfect enough, not being happy enough, not being as amazing as our partner, etc. So we do this morning routine of getting out our aggression by throwing a mini tantrum where no one else can see or hear us. This helps us to NOT express that insecure rage at our partner. They never have to know our fears because we're taking it out in solitude. For the rest fo the day, we can go back towards being the loving compassionate person in relationship we strive to be.

Her creative source comes from a deep place that can be difficult to access, so there's a disconnect with most listeners. It took me a long time to grow into her music, and now that I'm finally feeling it I measure other people's musical maturity through Bjork. It happened to me many times to have nightmares while I was sleeping near my partner and to wake up before him and feel desperate. It's a strange coincidence the way she describes pretty much the same thing, but with the metaphor of the mountain and throwing things off.
I also remember when I used to listen to this song when I was 14 years old. I used to dance on it, I couldn't get the meaning and I didn't exactly know the lyrics at the time, but dancing on it got me a strange feeling, I felt like it wasn't such a danceable song. Later, after some years, I read the lyrics, the interviews where she talks about the meaning and I understood. Now I can't dance anymore, I just cry. And I don't even know if it's for sadness, or sensibility or love or wisdom, but I feel something very deep while I listen to it. Björk is one of the best songwriter ever, and people sometimes forget about this, because they concentrate more about her voice, arrangements, music videos, visuals etc. But I think that even if you take this song alone singed only with a piano, it remains a masterpiece.

I have all of Bjork's albums and all her songs are on my iPod yet still, even through every single on of her songs, this one is still my favourite of hers! It was actually the first song of hers I heard. I was 6 and this song just stuck to my head.

@realrainbows The songwriter is credited solely as Bjork, by the way. Production is credited to Bjork and Nelle Hooper.

And Bjork was also the keyboardist, as well as the vocalist, for her band "the Sugarcubes" before she went solo - the girl ain't just a voice (though what a voice), she's a musician and she does, and always has, written her own songs (the only real notable exception to that is that "It's oh so quiet" is a cover version of a German song).

And, quite frankly, this should be obvious, as all of her music is unconventional - even before she went solo - so the only real way that her entire catalogue could have that consistent "weird" vibe throughout is if she is the origin of that. Because you're not going to get a whole succession of different songwriters that keep this consistent style she has.

I'm honestly more impressed when people can make this kind of music outside of the 90's. There was so much of it back then and it was mainstream. Now we get very little, at this level, with this sort of production. It's a sad reflection of the way the industry "developed" this past 20 years.

Personally, I feel like this could be a song about being in a good relationship after surviving abuse. Going to the edge of a mountain, throwing the old things, the frightening things, or just... whatever... you've got hanging onto you after you've survived, away, over the cliff. Imagining how things could have been if you'd stayed. That way, when you come back, you can appreciate being happy and safe in your new life. Might just be me.

remins me of my first relationship. i'd just got into bjork and the drum tracks reminded me of the train rides i'd take there. the chorus reminded me of the strained distance we had. we didn't last long in the end. like the strings at the closing, everything is beautiful for a few minutes in life.
