Break Away
♫ Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreamin' of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I pray
I could breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway

Want to feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get on board a fast train
Travel on a jet plane
Faraway
And breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes till I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
I won't forget all the ones that I love
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging 'round revolvin' doors
Maybe I don't know where they take me
But gotta keep movin' on
Movin' on
Fly away
Breakaway

I'll spread my wings, and I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

"Catch My Breath"

I don't wanna be left behind
Distance was a friend of mine
Catching breath in a web of lies
I've spent most of my life
Riding waves, playing acrobat
Shadowboxing the other half
Learning how to react
I've spent most of my time

Catching my breath, letting it go,
Turning my cheek for the sake of the show
Now that you know, this is my life,
I won't be told what's supposed to be right

Catch my breath, no one can hold me back,
I ain't got time for that
Catch my breath, won't let them get me down,
It's all so simple now

Addicted to the love I found
Heavy heart, now a weightless cloud
Making time for the ones that count
I'll spend the rest of my time
Laughing hard with the windows down
Leaving footprints all over town
Keeping faith, karma comes around
I will spend the rest of my life

Catching my breath, letting it go,
Turning my cheek for the sake of the show
Now that you know, this is my life,
I won't be told what's supposed to be right

Catch my breath, no one can hold me back,
I ain't got time for that
Catch my breath, won't let them get me down,
It's all so simple now

You helped me see
The beauty in everything

Catching my breath, letting it go,
Turning my cheek for the sake of the show
Now that you know, this is my life,
I won't be told what's supposed to be right

Catching my breath, letting it go,
Turning my cheek for the sake of the show
Now that you know, this is my life,
I won't be told what's supposed to be right

Catch my breath

Catch my breath, no one can hold me back,
I ain't got time for that
Catch my breath, won't let them get me down,
It's all so simple now
It's all so simple now

Catching my breath, letting it go,
Turning my cheek for the sake of the show
Now that you know, this is my life,
I won't be told what's supposed to be right

(Catch my breath)

Catch my breath, no one can hold me back,
I ain't got time for that
(Catch my breath)
Catch my breath (catch my breath), won't let them get me down,
It's all so simple now

@PiePierrot

As a survivor of childhood abuse, I really appreciate this song and the lines "This is my life/I won't be told what's supposed to be right!" really hit home for me. Almost all my life I've been told by both my abuser and a few others that my opinions were wrong, that I was wrong. They mocked and belittled me and insulted me whenever I expressed an "bad" opinion or otherwise behaved in a way they didn't like. I feel like thanks to that I'm left with low self-esteem and I'm always second-guessing myself. Whenever I get into an argument with someone, I can't help but wonder afterward if perhaps I was the one in the wrong? But I'm sick of second-guessing myself and backing down, I'm going to try being a bit more assertive. I'm going to try trusting in and believing in myself a bit more, though I don't know if I'll succeed, but I have to try. Anyway, thank you, Kelly Clarkson, for this beautiful and inspiring song!

I know EXACTLY how you feel, because I feel that way

@BarbieGurl1977

I'm 41 and have let it eat away at me since I was a kid... It's sad when you got parents who never tried to protect you or do something about the abuse ...It sucks to grow up and people saying you lie about things knowing you didn't ... Or your parents being so fake like everything they did was right and never did anything wrong and if you dare open your mouth your just being a trouble maker and trying to cause problems and drama for the rest of the family.... Sick part is they know how.. and use the victim card so well the actual victim is left to feel like they have no where to turn so they keep quiet and sit still because they have been made out to be a lier. It's OK I'm keeping faith karma comes around.

All of her songs are just so relatable. "Dark Side", "People Like Us", "Catch My Breath" & "Behind These Hazel Eyes" are pretty much a soundtrack to my life right now, and even "Stronger", "Because of You", "Breakaway", and "Already Gone" hold a lot of meaning for me, even though I'm interpreting them differently than most people. Thanks Kelly.

K Moore yeah me 2

@johnhowarth5025

What about "Heartbeat Song"?

@schwozluv8364

John Howarth maybe her worst one, but even that one still holds some meaning to it.
