Echoes
♫ Pink Floyd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand
The best I can

And no one called us to the land
And no one crosses there alive
No one speaks and no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Almost everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me
To rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabys
And no one makes me close my eyes

So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pink Floyd's song "Echoes" are a contemplative observation of the vastness of the world, the mysteries that lie within the depths of the ocean, the uncertainty of life and the search for unity in a world that often seems fragmented. The song begins with the image of an albatross hanging motionless in the air, a symbol of freedom and flight, yet it also suggests a sense of suspended time, a moment where everything stands still. The next verse speaks of the coral caves, deep below the rolling waves, where an echo of a distant time can be heard, a reminder of the ancient history that lies beneath the oceans. The imagery of the "green and submarine" world creates a sense of being immersed in a deep and mystical place.

The following verse speaks of the uncertainty and transience of life, where "no one called us to the land" and "no one knows the where's or why's". This sense of drifting is contrasted with a sense of purpose, as "something stirs and something tries, starts to climb toward the light". The final verse is a contemplation on the nature of identity and the unity between all beings, a recognition that "I am you and what I see is me". The singer wonders whether he should take the hand of the stranger and lead him through the land, in an attempt to understand the world and bridge the gap between self and other. The song ends with a sense of hope, as the singer throws the windows wide and calls to the sky, open to new possibilities of connection and meaning.
