Sleep
♫ Poets Of The Fall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear your heartbeat
Beat a frantic pace
And it's not even seven AM
You're feeling the rush of anguish settling
You cannot help showing them in
Hurry up then
Or you'll fall behind and
They will take control of you
And you need to heal the hurt behind your eyes
Fickle words crowding your mind

So
Sleep, sugar, let your dreams flood in
Like waves of sweet fire, you're safe within
Sleep, sweetie, let your floods come rushing in
And carry you over to a new morning

Try as you might
You try to give it up
Seems to be holding on fast
It's hand in your hand
A shadow over you
A beggar for soul in your face
Still it don't mater if you won't listen
If you won't let them follow you
You just need to heal
Make good all your lies
Move on and don't look behind

So
Sleep, sugar, let your dreams flood in
Like waves of sweet fire, you're safe within
Sleep, sweetie, let your floods come rushing in
And carry you over to a new morning

Day after day
Fickle visions messing with your head
Fickle, vicious
Sleeping in your bed
Messing with your head
Fickle visions
Fickle, vicious

Sleep, sugar, let your dreams flood in
Like waves of sweet fire, you're safe within

Sleep, sweetie, let your floods come rushing in
And carry you over to a new morning

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Sleep” by Poets of the Fall are about someone who is struggling with overwhelming emotions that are wreaking havoc on their mental state. The opening lines describe the physical manifestation of this emotional turmoil with the frantic beating of the singer’s heart which is causing them to feel anguished and uneasy. The rush of this anguish is causing the singer to reveal their feelings even though they may not want to. The singer is feeling a sense of urgency, fearing that they will fall behind if they don't keep up. However, he/she also needs to heal the hurt that they feel behind their eyes.

The chorus of the song is like a soothing lullaby asking the singer to let go of their worries, and let their mind be flooded with dreams that can bring new beginnings. The chorus is like a mother's arms that will protect the singer and keep them safe. The song also speaks of the struggle that the singer faces while trying to let go of their problems, but the emotions seem to cling onto them with a tight grip. The singer desperately wants to escape the emotions that have taken over their life, but they can't seem to shake them off.

I loved every second of it! 😂

@classicmusic2477

Me to some parts freaks me out lol

@TarkinRocher

Not only my favorite part of the show, but the most effective advertising, too.
Every goty nominee should have the chance to make a presentation like this.

@Jillbles

@@TarkinRocher I adore Remedy & Alan Wake in particular, have for a decade, but my computer's graphics card wasn't up to it and money's tight so I was waiting for a sale on PlayStation.
I muted the awards performance and bought the game before the song was over. Needed. To. See. It. (I got to that part of the game last night). 😆❤️

When Sam Lake appears on stage, that right there is the face, the expression, the posture and the body language
of an openminded, creative, talented, yet humble man who is having the time of his life.

@chrismaverick9828

Imagine starting off in a small-time programming office, putting your face to the storyboards of a game that could be hit or miss, and watching it all explode and become legendary from there. Creative freedom and a fanbase that respects and enjoys that freedom is every game programmer's dream. That POTF (epic group) has grown because of the start they got from him and they work so closely to this day..... How could he NOT smile and enjoy it?

@jtjones4727

I don't mind admitting I have a bit of a man crush on Sam Lake, such a cool dude. And the whole team behind AW2, such an awesome experience. I had voted almost across the board for AW2 at the game awards. I was kind of disappointed the game did not get game of the year.

@littlered6340

@@jtjones4727same except the word man, I just have a regular, full-on crush.

@margarethmichelina5146

And I can't believe Sam is 53 years old now. Dude looks like he's in his 30s.

@Vihtori_Lettunen

You cannot comprehend how HUGE this is for Finnish culture and self image. I'm so proud of all the hard working people behind Alan Wake and Poets of the Fall. Masterfull performance!
