From Here On Out
♫ The Killers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little birdie whispered in my ear
You've been cooking up a world of fear
Put your hands in things you shouldn't have known
You was riding in the danger zone

Well you had us all fooled with your quarterback smile
And your crocodile tears there for a while
And my paradigm shifted, man you're making me shout

Hey, from here from out
Friends are gonna be hard to come by
Left us wonderin' what it all was about
He had it easy, man he chose the hard way
Walk that old, lonely road in the shadow of a doubt
From here on out

Should our paths ever decide to cross
You may wonder what the trouble cost
That don't matter now, life goes on
Hallelujah, the troubles' gone

No sense in holding purpose and it's better to forgive
These are things that I must learn, to practice while I live
And my paradigm shifted, man you're making me shout

Hey, from here from out
Friends are gonna be hard to come by
Left us wonderin' what it all was about
He had it easy, man he chose the hard way
Walk that old, lonely road in the shadow of a doubt

Hey, from here on out
Let the bugle blow a song of peace time
Left us wonderin' what it all was about
You may deny it but you carry it with you

Down that old lonely road in the shadow of a doubt
Yeah, from here on out

Overall Meaning

The song "From Here On Out" by The Killers, seems to address the theme of betrayal. The first verse speaks of someone who has put their hands in things they shouldn't have known and were riding in the danger zone. The singer of the song seems to feel betrayed by this person who had fooled them all with a quarterback smile and crocodile tears. The chorus conveys the message that now friends will be hard to come by, and the singer is left wondering what it was all about. He then advises the betrayer to let go of the past and that life goes on. In the next verse, the singer states that it's better to forgive and move on, and the song concludes with the same chorus.

The song's lyrics suggest that the singer has experienced someone close betraying them. It is likely that this is based on personal experiences of Brandon Flowers, the band's lead singer, who wrote the lyrics. The song relies heavily on Flower's ability to convey emotions through his distinctive voice. The song's melody is a mix of indie, rock, and country that adds to the emotive content of the lyrics.

i feel you so much my friend , i also used to view myself as failure and loser , and for a very long time i also didn't cared about my life , health or future.

until the day a close girlfriend of mine suddenly died , with barely 20 years at that point in time.

it hit me like a truck , is till miss but as tragic at that was , it felt like a warning shot , it made me realize i cant keep living like that , i cant be a burden for people around me and myself , and for her sake , i pulled myself together fixed my life , my mental and physicals health and worked my ass off to get a job.

while it was a huge pain and a very very bumpy road , it was worth it.

Looking back i can be very proud of myself i basically have been reborn a new person.

it does bring her back , but that is the least i can do to honor her early passing, and tbh i also think about naming my daughter after her , in honor. maybe the last thing is a bad idea but it just feels like i have to do that.

and oddly enough , i am looking forwards to one day tell her how her passing wasn't in vein , how she in a really really weird and twisted way , saved my life, and for that i am ever grateful!

Now you see me standin' in the lights
But you never saw my sacrifice
Or all the nights I had to struggle to survive
Had to lose it all to win the fight
I had to fall so many times (oh-oh-oh)
Now I'm the last one standin'
Uh, you weren't with me on the cold block nights
Now you front row for the spotlight
Now the diamonds in the Audemars bright
Jets overseas for a far flight
Young nigga on bullshit and I ball on 'em, Bill Cartwright
Knew I could shine through the darkness
I guess I always been a star type
That lion in me made my heart fight, could've been a victim of an opp pipe
Took a million risks just to get to this 'cause we ain't the ones that the cops like
Been so many times God tested me, they only see the answers I got right
They commentin' all on the blogs, tryna tell me how to live my life
And I waited so patiently, if you could take off, don't wait for me
No days off, grind faithfully, I keep thankin' God for savin' me
Front line, showcasin' our bravery
I know that top spot, it was made for me
It all paid off so we felt the struggle so painfully
Now you see me standin' in the lights
But you never saw my sacrifice
Or all the nights I had to struggle to survive
Had to lose it all to win the fight
I had to fall so many times (oh-oh-oh)
Now I'm the last one standin'
Yeah, you know the code we gotta live by
Never mind all the ice cubes on this wristwear in the big body
Live by the gun, get bodied or it's hella time in that cell
It was hella times where I failed, when I had to double back from them Ls
Bet he don't double back when he tell
'Cause it ain't no comin' back when you tell
Why would you leave me here by myself? A nigga be lonely
Ayy, I blew the whole bag on they flights, ain't leavin' the homies
If he really gang, then get him a chain, no cubic zirconies
White Zomb' in the stogey, stood firm, never folded
Furthest thing from a rodent, you put the jacket on and you bogus
Yeah, big dawg and they know it
I had to spin off to stay focused
Longev' on the motion
We don't abandon ship when it's hopeless
I done been broke before and they know
I make it look easy
Like I made it overnight
I make it look easy
But you don't see the dark side
And all of the monsters I had to fight (fight)
And all of the nightmares (nightmares)
Made me stronger than life (yeah)
Y'all say (what?), I've changed (huh)
Really, though? (Tell me), how so? (I got)
Got all (what?), this bread (yeah)
I'm still (what?), sour though (huh)
I don't know (I'm a), square peg (in a), round hole (yeah)
Like a block of cheese in a paper towel roll
Rocky Balboa (I), never been no (what?), towel thrower
Even when I got kicked to the curb (yeah)
Life knocked my dick in the dirt
I got back up, flipped it the bird
'Til I earned the attention I yearned
Not to mention, I learned
How to turn resentment and hurt
To an unquenchable thirst, in the simplest terms
It's revenge of the nerd, in every sense of the word
But all you see is the fame and the millions
You don't see the strength and resilience (nah)
How I rack my brain but it feels as if I'm tryna explain it to children (damn)
So a lot of this pain isn't healin', no escapin' it, this anger is spilling
Almost like recreatin' a feelin' of 9/11 when the second plane hit the building
So let 'em paint you the villain
Some of this just may be a symptom (yeah)
Of havin' way too much income (mmm)
But when you struggled every day just to get some (yeah)
Now all of this hate is a syndrome (yuh)
When they can't relate, and that stems from (what?)
Money lookin' like it grows on trees
Yeah, they're green but those aren't leaves (leaves)
Sufficed to say, with every sacrifice I made
It's like I gave up my life to fame
All the nights that I lied awake
Nights I stayed up to write and pray
Had to claw, scratch and fight my way
Just follow me, and I'll light the way
Look to the hook if your sky look grey (Skylar Grey)
And rappers, how can we be on the same level now
When I gotta look down and see these clowns that are on the ground?
Bitch, I got clouds beneath me
Ever since I put out the EP to the height of 2003 me
You ain't see the struggle to make it out the D
Because I made it somehow look easy
Now you see me standin' in the lights
But you never saw my sacrifice
Or all the nights I had to struggle to survive
Had to lose it all to win the fight
I had to fall so many times (oh-oh-oh)
Now I'm the last one standin' (oh-oh-oh)
Now I'm the last one standin'

I love this song. The message. Ive worked all my life, struggling job from job paycheck to paycheck taking care of my family, kids. I finally joined the army and figured my life out at 26 and never looked back. Left everything and everyone behind and now im the last one standing. Nobody knows the sacrifices and hard nights that i had to go through, they just see me shining now and i cry listening to this because of the pain and hardships i had to go through to get to this comfortable and happy spot. Eminem, thank you
