This song's about Sharon's father. When he passed, she couldn't find it in herself to accept it, and really felt she needed to speak to him one last time before he moved to the afterlife. So when she's saying that she's waiting for the last goodbye, it's her waiting for some sort of goodbye/sign from the afterlife from her father :'(

Believe it or not but I just saw a post from a Greta Van Fleet fan saying that bands like Epica, Within Temptation and Nightwish all sound the same? First off I am surprised that this person even heard of these bands because a lot of their fans only follow the music on mainstream radio stations. But for them to say that these bands sound all the same coming from a fan of a band that sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin is ridiculous in itself. All these bands have their own unique style in symphonic metal and both Nightwish and Within Temptation have changed within themselves over their own history.

I love the imagery of chasing down and connecting with the darker self. This is not just a pretty picture, but rather an important psychological need for all human beings. It is not possible to be all you can be until you have accepted the dark parts of yourself. Once you have embraced it and learn to love all of yourself, you become confident and powerful, blasting away all of the shame and hesitation that held you back.

What I mean to say is: Within Temptation is a band that has great intelligence as well as some really catchy music. It isn't just ear-candy. It's deeply meaningful and that's why I keep listening.

This is one of the best songs on the album, they're all great, but this one has a connection to it. I love how it plays into the childhood belief that people turn into stars when they die, and hearing why this song was made makes it feel even more like that. Within Temptation and Evanescence are my 2 favourite bands because to me they don't sing, they convey raw emotion!

Love the darker post-apocalyptic sound and look of Within Temptation's new videos! I get tired of all the comments regarding what genre this is...Bands have to grow and change; artists need to constantly re-invent themselves and try new sounds. It may be more "pop music" than Nightwish, but it is also more accessible to non-metal fans. I am a musician too and my band and my music changes yearly. Thank you Within Temptation and Sharon for being such an inspiration. I wish I lived in Europe where symphonic metal/metal influenced music and keyboards in music are so much more prominent (Delain, Nightwish, Epica, Lacuna Coil, etc). I can't wait to see them in California!

You call this dark apocalyptic music ? With all due respect, I dont understand it. The lyrics must be, but the melody is'nt anywhere near dark. People who like this are either fanboyz to whom everything is permissable. Just because you are in a band, does'nt mean you are accurate in evaluating a content for what it really is. Musical change and experimentation is good. Atleast some loyal fans of WT have lost respect for them with a number of modern pop sounding albums released recently. This is a band which appears second to Nightwish in the genre "Symphonic Metal". What justice has this song done to the genre?

@@jacobantony1040 Hah, hah, sorry but I've been playing music all my life and am about as far from that as possible. I'm a classically trained pianist, composer, and teacher. I rarely comment as these threads can devolve into people attacking each other which is silly. This particular song is pretty "poppy" and less metal than much of their work. I totally agree with those saying that; as they move away from a true symphonic metal sound, they are also going to loose metal fans who only listen to metal music. It is pretty obvious they are going for a post-apocalyptic look in their new videos. I am very selective in my musical taste but I do like music from many genres; for me it's more about the technical ability of the band, how tight they are, and their songwriting abilities and sound. I don't care if they fit a genre exactly or not. This song is a little too poppy for me as well; I like "The Reckoning" with it's wall of sound and underlying chorus much better than this song.
I am not "evaluating content," I am sharing my impression of how I perceive it. That is the raison d'etre of music and other arts. It is subjective and people respond to it differently which is why it's so wonderful. There is no "right or wrong" impression or perception. Also, right now music is in a very exciting time of mixing genres. There is a great deal of crossover genre music and WIT is going for that as well. As a classically trained musician who does crossover music now, I admire bands that are versatile in their sound. I am enclosing a comment from Sharon from one of their interviews on Resist via LoudWire.

"Some would say this album is more pop-friendly/modern, though any heavier band writing catchy music with some beats get that tag thrown at them today.
For us personally we have always been a band that wants to write catchy songs in a way. I think Resist has a new sound for us. We like it so much because it sounds so refreshing. What helped us was sounds from reggae, hip-hop and other kinds of music — you get different kinds of rhythms. Even some songs in this album are groovy, which I have always liked playing but we were never able to [properly] do it. Somehow we did find a way to integrate that into our songs to make this more cool more metal / rock [hybrid] because it is more American sounding in a way."
Also, bands have to make money or they won't survive. But as they change, they will loose and gain fans. Most bands do not play exactly the same music their entire careers. They expand and grow if they are smart and innovative, but also try to remain true to their roots.

I agree. Never really enjoyed them on their earlier material, apart from 'Faster' or 'Iron' but this album is friggin awesome. Emotive, powerful and epic stuff. Mad World is one of the favs tracks as well as this one

Their arrangements are 100% radio style pop music. Metal / Rock fans usually don't like that very much, because for people who are into more complex music, this simply sounds very boring. (Doesn't mean it is bad in general).
For pop fans on the other hand, there might be better options. Especially because they often don't like the metal elements in such metal/pop crossover bands.
But then again, 3 million clicks isn't really "underrated".

I really like the new style and definitely will say that this style suits them and hopefully they will experiment more in the future.

Knowing the meaning behind this song for Sharon's father, it makes sense the goosebumps and tears that effected me the first time I heard it. I discovered 'Supernova' coincidentally a few months after losing my own father and every time I listen to it I wish I still believed in an afterlife so I had some chance of seeing my dearest hero again. If there was a soul who could break through the barrier of life and death it would have been my dad. He loved me dearly and he was a powerful, determined man, a boxer and fighter with a burning spirit that would have lit up the skies like a supernova indeed...

What? The metal bands have horrible music videos and Within Temptation is not an exception. Have you seen Ice Queen? It was corny and this looks like a revisited version. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Within Temptation, Rush, Judas Priest - all have made awful music videos. Just because this video has beautiful Sharon's face does not make it good.

Wonderful comment. I found several friends through this band across the world, and we found that sense of connection through music. Some are no longer here, but those are memories I will cherish when they were still here. I've been a fan for about 14-15 years.

Jarosław Baliun, no metal at all bro.. They sold out a long time ago. The guitarists chug their guitars, but all i hear is synth😂. And it comes as no surprise though. Symphonic metal is a genre which sounds closest to pop music. But this is just too much pop for one song here. 😂..I think its time to shift their genre too. Probably rebrand themselves under another name with the same members.

Easily one of my favorite bands. Amazing music, voice and lyrics.I lost my dad in 2015. He was only 58. Im over the loss now but it was very hard to handle. I lost the man that raised me, wo taught me how to fish, how to play catch and how to use a computer (1989). He was so proud I was a Marine. I still miss him but life goes on.

Even with Within Temptation sounding more mainstream in their music over these 2 decades with each new record they will never be mainstream because lyrically they write mostly about the corruption of the establishment. They will always be shut out by the mainstream rock and pop radio stations and mainstream media because of their lyrical writing. The establishment knows that Within Temptation has a decent worldwide following but the establishment will try their best to keep Within Temptation and other bands popularity under control by controlling where and how they get played in the world on whatever media outlet. If Within Temptation wrote about sex, partying and personal life problems that don't blame the establishment than this band would have been a mega act with the establishment media.

@@Brakiros I do the same as well when I am on my free time. The only time I listen to the radio is when I get this one job that I have at work where there is a radio at this location. I just can't believe how bad rock radio has gotten over the years. Pop bands are now consistently on rock radio whether it's a traditional rock radio format or an alt rock radio format. For the traditional rock radio format, metal music, especially these subgenres of metal are almost nonexistent. Basically the only metal today being played on rock radio are from the mega bands of the 1970s and 1980s and the newer metal bands are very rarely played on rock radio. The mainstream acts like metal is dead but when I go to a metal show the audiences for these bands are loaded with people at these shows and it looks like metal fans are more dedicated fans than any other genre when it comes to buying merchandise of these bands.

This type of new age rock/metal used to be everywhere in the 90's and early 2000's. Then somehow crap like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga started to become popular. Man I miss the days when mainstream radio and MTV was full of Evanescence, Within Temptation, Linkin Park, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, Nickleback, Creed, etc. Those was the good days.

Now I don't bother even turning on the radio anymore, nothing but garbage these days.
