Happy End’s albums blended Western folk singing with Japanese melodies. Its members were 細野晴臣 (Haruomi Hosono, bass, vocals), 松本隆 (Takashi Matsumoto, drums, from the band Apryl Fool), 大瀧詠一 (Eiichi Ohtaki, guitar, vocals), and 鈴木茂 (Shigeru Suzuki, guitar, vocals). They originally belonged to the URC Records recording label, and later the Bellwood Records label. Hosono later went on to join the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
In 2003, the Happy End song “Kaze Wo Atsumete” appeared on the Lost In Translation movie soundtrack.

言い得て妙かも知れない。
このアルバムに先立つ1969年だったか70年だったかに、雑誌『ニューミュージックマガジン』誌上で論争があった。先年物故された内田裕也氏が「日本語はロック音楽にノラない」と主張し、松本隆氏と細野晴臣氏が「そんなことはない。日本語でロックにノる楽曲がまだ無いだけだ。」と主張する、いわゆる「日本語ロック」論争が雑誌の上であったんだよ。
内田氏はフラワートラベリングバンド（FTB）で、当時はもうボーカル業はやめてFTBのプロデュース稼業だったかも知れないけど、そのFTBで英語で、海外ロックのカバーでないオリジナルなロックを演った。英語なので海外マーケットも狙っていて、実際にカナダでドクター・ジョンの前座とかもやったらしい。（考えてみりゃそれも凄いこと）
はっぴいえんどは、謂わばそのFTB的な価値観に対抗する立ち位置で、日本語歌詞にこだわったんだね。だからこそ「英語っぽい日本語を歌うという行為」は避けたんだろう。そのことをダサいと感じていたんだろう。

曲と演奏はブラインドフェイスよりかっこよく、歌詞もかっこいい。まるでつげ義春の「ねじ式」のBGMのようだ。1970年代の始めでこのレベルの高さは驚異的だ。

曲冒頭、ギター／ベース／ドラムス三者の「拍の置き方」がそれぞれ違うのに、先ず強烈に耳を持ってかれる。耳が引っ張られる。
自身で演奏する者なら誰でも「お？お？ぉおオ？」ってなる。71年当時にLPで最初に聴いた時まだ子供だった自分は「演奏おかしいジャン。」とすら思った。斬新だった。
歌詞もつげ義春というか雑誌『ガロ』を連想させた。本当に、ほんとうに、カッコ良かった。
